About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Software Developer to shape the technical direction of the tools at the core of our energy and emissions work - including the AI-driven features we think will set our products apart. You'll own systems, not just features: setting architecture, choosing where AI genuinely earns its place, and raising the bar for how we build and ship.This is still a hands-on role. You'll write a lot of production code, but you'll also mentor other developers, work directly with clients and leadership, and make the calls that keep a small team moving fast without breaking what matters.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and architecture of our web applications and data platform, making the trade-offs between speed, cost, and long-term maintainability.
- Own our energy and emissions data pipelines end to end - ingestion, modeling, validation, and the data quality that clients and reporting depend on.
- Set the direction for AI/ML in our products: decide where LLM-based tooling, automation, and analytics add real value, build the first versions, and take the best ones to production.
- Design robust APIs and integrations, and establish the patterns others on the team build on.
- Own reliability in production - monitoring, security, cloud infrastructure, and cost - and lead the response when something breaks.
- Mentor junior and intermediate developers through code review, pairing, and technical guidance.
- Work directly with clients, domain experts, and leadership to turn fuzzy requirements into clear technical plans and realistic estimates.
- Shape how we work: development practices, testing, CI/CD, and the tools we choose to adopt (or not).
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software development, with a track record of designing and shipping production systems you owned end to end.
Required Skills
- Deep expertise in Python and at least one modern web stack (e.g. JavaScript/TypeScript with React), plus the judgment to know when to reach for something else.
- Strong SQL and relational database design skills, and solid experience building and running workloads on AWS or Azure - infrastructure as code, CI/CD, monitoring, and cost control.
- Production experience with AI/ML: you've shipped LLM-based features or ML models to real users and dealt with evaluation, cost, latency, and failure modes, not just demos.
- Experience making architecture decisions, documenting them, and living with the consequences.
- A history of mentoring other developers and raising the quality of a team's work.
- Clear communication with technical and non-technical people alike, and a bias toward shipping without cutting the corners that matter.
- We hire on capability. Expect a technical assessment focused on system design and real-world judgment, not trivia.
Preferred Skills
- Data-engineering depth: orchestration tools, time-series data, or large-scale ETL.
- Background in energy, sustainability, or climate - especially emissions accounting, GHG reporting, or energy modeling.
- Experience as a tech lead or founding engineer in an early-stage or small-team environment.
- Experience with security, compliance, or data governance for client-facing systems.
