Original job description

Ready to Lead and Shape the Future of Cultural Heritage?

ERM archaeologists conduct work for major clients across Canada and across industries. We work on a wide range of projects in diverse settings across Canada from remote helicopter access work to urban and suburban work that could be just around the corner. Do you want to better understand how archaeology and cultural heritage fit into the broader environmental framework? ERM archaeologists work with clients throughout a project’s lifecycle from initiation and permitting, through environmental assessment and construction, into operation, and beyond.

If you’re an experienced archaeologist with a passion for leadership and technical excellence, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact. At ERM, we don’t just conduct assessments - we help clients navigate complex cultural heritage challenges while preserving history for future generations. Join our global consulting team and lead projects that matter.

Why This Role Matters

As a Managing Technical Consultant, Archaeologist, you’ll be at the forefront of ERM’s archaeology and cultural heritage practice. We have offices across Canada with archaeologists currently in Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver.

Your expertise will guide critical decisions, ensuring compliance and cultural preservation. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional who thrives on leadership, collaboration, and delivering exceptional results.

What Your Impact Is

Hold permits and lead archaeological work in Northern Canada.
Overseeing research, artifact analysis, and reporting.
Act as a trusted advisor to clients and regulatory agencies, representing ERM with professionalism and expertise.
Drive development of initiatives to expand ERM’s archaeology and cultural heritage services across Canada.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions that meet client needs and regulatory standards.

What You’ll Bring

Required:

Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field.
4+ years of professional experience in archaeology and cultural heritage.
Current permit holder in Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and/or Yukon.
Proven ability to lead field programs and complete research projects.
Strong communication, writing, and computer skills.
Travel will be required.
Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred:

Permit holder status in other provinces/territories.
Business development experience.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage archaeological field programs under applicable permits.
Conduct literature reviews, artifact analysis, and cataloguing.
Prepare high-quality reports and deliverables for clients.
Helping to develop Heritage Chapters and Heritage Managements to support Environmental Assessments and project permitting.
Communicate effectively with clients, agencies, and internal teams.
Represent ERM at meetings with provincial, territorial, and federal agencies.
Support growth of ERM’s archaeology and cultural heritage practice through technical excellence and client engagement.

For the  Managing Technical Consultant, Archaeologist position, the anticipated annual base pay is $90,700–$110,000 (CAD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay subject to the sole discretion of ERM and its policies and procedures (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, RRSP/DPSP, and other applicable benefits to eligible employees.

Who We Are:

As the largest global pure play sustainability consultancy, we partner with the world’s leading organizations, creating innovative solutions to sustainability challenges and unlocking commercial opportunities that meet the needs of today while preserving opportunity for future generations.
