Original job description

Are you a visionary Hotel General Manager or a seasoned Assistant General Manager ready for your next opportunity? Join the Inn on Long Lake and lead a hotel with an outstanding workplace culture, competitive compensation and a beautiful lakeside setting on Vancouver Island.

At Inn on Long Lake, hospitality starts with people: the guests who choose to stay with us, the team who welcomes them, and the relationships we build in our community.

We are an independent, 64-room lakeside hotel in Nanaimo, with lake views and a private balcony or patio in every room. Our property offers a welcoming place to stay for visitors exploring Vancouver Island, families on holiday, corporate travellers, and guests coming to Nanaimo for medical care. With continental breakfast, a lakeside hot tub and sauna, gym, firepits, and docks for kayaking and paddleboarding, we offer an experience that brings many guests back year after year.

We are looking for an experienced General Manager, or an accomplished Assistant General Manager ready to take the next step, to lead our team and guide the continued success of the hotel.

WHAT YOU’LL LOVE ABOUT WORKING HERE

  • We are a cohesive team filled with passion, lots of long tenure and laughter every day.
  • Training and development is central to our team strategy.
  • Our core values are so much more than words, they are our foundation.
  • Compensation & benefits are very competitive, allowing us to compete with larger hotels.
  • At our small hotel, you will wear many hats and be hands-on, allowing you to have a direct impact on many areas of the business i.e., human resources, accounting, revenue management.
  • Our continuous improvement approach to service, quality and guest satisfaction is integral to our brand.
  • We will provide you with a supported onboarding process, setting you up to be highly successful in your new role.
  • Excellent Recruitment strategies are in place to attract frontline team members.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

You bring a practical, hands-on approach to hotel leadership, with experience in a similarly sized, mid-tier property and an understanding of what it takes to lead frontline employees directly.

This is a hands-on role with responsibility for the hotel’s daily operations, team leadership, financial performance and business development. You will work closely with the owners and department leaders, balancing the immediate needs of the property with longer-term priorities.

Your strong revenue management skills help you make informed decisions about room rates, inventory and booking channels to maximize revenue and profitability. You should be comfortable moving between reviewing room rates, coaching a team member, resolving a guest concern, following up with a corporate account and coordinating a property improvement project. You take ownership, communicate clearly and make sure things get done.

Organized and dependable, you manage competing priorities, maintain accurate administration, and confidently negotiate and oversee corporate accommodation agreements. You combine these strengths with effective marketing, a genuine commitment to your team and a focus on exceptional guest experiences, taking initiative and following through while working collaboratively with the owners.

  • Knowledge of food sanitation, inspection, and hotel inventory control per all local and regional regulations.
  • Promote sustainable practices.
  • Attend conferences, as necessary, including the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce and other local business association meetings as a representative of the hotel.

  • Strong financial and analytical skills, including budgeting, forecasting, interpreting financial statements and controlling costs, supported by a sound understanding of bookkeeping and accounting systems.
