Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Sign Designer / Structural Designer with strong structural, fabrication, and drafting knowledge to join our team in Grimsby.
This is not strictly a graphic design position. We are looking for someone who understands how commercial signs are engineered, fabricated, assembled, and installed and can create accurate, practical, production-ready drawings.
The ideal candidate will have a strong combination of design, structural understanding, fabrication knowledge, and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Design commercial signage including pylon signs, channel letters, illuminated signs, wall signs, sign cabinets, and custom structures.
- Create detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, sections, details, and production drawings.
- Develop structural concepts for large and complex signage projects.
- Determine appropriate aluminum and steel framing, supports, mounting methods, and connections.
- Prepare accurate dimensions, material specifications, and fabrication details.
- Design with fabrication, CNC production, assembly, transportation, and installation in mind.
- Work closely with fabrication, CNC, production, and installation teams.
- Review site conditions and develop practical mounting and structural solutions.
- Prepare drawings suitable for engineering review and approval when required.
- Identify potential fabrication or installation issues before projects reach production.
- Support the transition from sales and design concepts into accurate, production-ready drawings.
- Coordinate design changes and revisions with internal teams, fabricators, and installers.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience in commercial sign design, structural fabrication, architectural metals, or a closely related industry.
- Strong understanding of aluminum and steel fabrication.
- Knowledge of welded structures, framing, mounting systems, and mechanical connections.
- Understanding of structural loads and practical structural design principles.
- Proven experience creating detailed shop and fabrication drawings.
- Strong proficiency with relevant design and drafting software.
- CorelDRAW and/or EnRoute experience is an asset.
- CNC manufacturing experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of illuminated signage, LEDs, acrylic/polycarbonate, and aluminum sign construction is an asset.
- Ability to communicate effectively with fabricators, production teams, engineers, and installers.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
