Original job description

About Fable

Global enterprises work with Fable to make products more accessible for over one billion people who live with disabilities. Our customers include global leaders like Walmart, Slack, and Shopify. Fable was featured on the Forbes Accessibility 100 list in 2025, awarded Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies in Design, and has received accolades from global entities like the World Summit Awards and the UN-endorsed Zero Project.

As we continue scaling our platform and expanding our AI capabilities, we're looking for experienced engineers who thrive in fast-moving environments, embrace AI-first software development, and take ownership from idea to production.

About The Role

Fable is looking for a highly motivated Senior Software Engineer with deep backend expertise, strong full-stack development skills, and hands-on experience building AI-powered applications and agentic workflows.

This is a senior individual contributor role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, takes ownership without waiting for direction, and consistently delivers high-quality software at speed.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will work closely with Product Management, Design, Development, Quality Engineering, and Site Reliability Engineering to design, build, and scale customer-facing products and platform capabilities. Success in this role requires strong technical leadership, adaptability, fast execution, and a passion for continuous learning in an AI-driven engineering environment.

Responsibilities

Technical Ownership

Own technical solutions end-to-end, translating customer and business needs into scalable, production-ready software.
Design, develop, test, deploy, and support software throughout its lifecycle.
Take accountability for solution quality, maintainability, security, scalability, and operational excellence.
Make sound architectural and implementation decisions with minimal oversight.
Drive technical execution while balancing delivery speed with engineering quality.
Proactively identify risks, remove blockers, and continuously improve engineering effectiveness.

Software Engineering

Design and build scalable backend services, APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
Develop modern full-stack applications across backend and frontend technologies.
Write clean, maintainable, well-tested, and secure code.
Optimize application performance, scalability, observability, and reliability.
Contribute to architecture, technical design, and platform evolution.
Improve developer experience through automation, tooling, and reusable engineering patterns.

AI Engineering

Design and build AI-powered product capabilities that create measurable customer value.
Develop AI agents, agentic workflows, and intelligent automation solutions.
Integrate Large Language Models (LLMs), AI services, and external APIs into production applications.
Build prompt orchestration, tool-calling, and multi-agent workflows.
Implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), semantic search, and knowledge retrieval where appropriate.
Evaluate emerging AI technologies and rapidly prototype new capabilities.
Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and similar technologies to improve engineering productivity.
Continuously identify opportunities to use AI to simplify engineering workflows and improve customer experiences.

Product & Customer Focus

Partner closely with Product Managers and Designers to understand customer problems and business objectives.
Translate customer needs into scalable, high-quality software solutions that deliver measurable business value.
Participate in technical discovery, solution design, estimation, and delivery planning.
Build solutions that prioritize accessibility, usability, reliability, and customer outcomes.

Engineering Excellence

Champion engineering best practices including code quality, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and secure software development.
Participate in peer code reviews and architectural design reviews.
Improve engineering standards through documentation, automation, and continuous improvement.
Participate in production support, incident response, root cause analysis, and operational improvements.
Reduce technical debt while maintaining delivery momentum.

Leadership

Provide technical leadership across projects and initiatives.
Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
Influence technical direction through collaboration and sound engineering judgment.
Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
8+ years of professional software development experience.
Extensive backend software engineering experience building scalable production systems.

Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and distributed systems.
Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
Experience with modern databases, caching technologies, and messaging systems.
Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices.
Experience working in Agile software development environments.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

AI Experience

Demonstrated hands-on experience with modern AI software development, including:

Building AI-enabled applications.
AI agent and agentic workflow development.
Large Language Model (LLM) integrations.
Prompt engineering and prompt optimization.
Tool calling and AI orchestration.
AI evaluation and testing.
Rapid prototyping using AI technologies.
AI-assisted software development.

Experience with technologies such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Model Context Protocol (MCP), LangChain, vector databases, or similar frameworks is considered a strong asset.

Technical Skills

Demonstrated technical skills, including:

TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, or C#
React or modern frontend frameworks
Node.js and backend application frameworks
REST APIs and GraphQL
AWS cloud services

Mentor others and contribute to a high-performing engineering culture.
Continuously learn and embrace emerging technologies, particularly AI.

What Success Looks Like

Within your first year, you will:

Independently deliver complex software solutions from design through production.
Build AI-powered capabilities that improve customer outcomes and engineering productivity.
Contribute to the evolution of Fable's platform architecture and engineering standards.
Improve software quality, reliability, scalability, and operational excellence.
Accelerate engineering execution through AI-assisted development and automation.
Be recognized as a trusted technical leader who consistently delivers high-impact outcomes.

Our values

To lead, listen first

You amplify voices that are less often heard and create space for those voices to grow. The quality of an idea doesn't correlate with the loudness of someone's voice.

The brain is a muscle

If you're going to do something, you will do it well. Practice often and rest when needed. Give your mind what it needs to thrive.

Unlearn to learn

What did we learn growing up, and what do we need to unlearn? It's essential to understanding our personal bias and position so that we can grow.

Benefits

What's in it for you?

At Fable, you'll join a collaborative and mission-driven environment where you'll work with people who care deeply about building a more inclusive digital world. We offer benefits such as stock options, career growth opportunities, professional development support, health and dental coverage, and more.

Accessibility accommodations

Fable is an inclusive workplace. If you are facing any accessibility requirements or concerns regarding the hiring process or employment with us, please fill out this form or email us at jobs@makeitfable.com and include the subject line "Accessibility accommodation for Senior Software Engineer job application."

Pay range

$135,000 - $150,000 the salary band is designed to reflect the range of skills and experience needed for the position and is subject to change. The final salary is based on relevant skills, experience, and internal equity. This posting reflects an existing vacancy. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools may be used to support part of the recruitment and selection process. However, all hiring decisions are made by our hiring managers.
