Original job description

Stevens Group of Companies

Stevens Group of Companies is a privately held, third-generation family business headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The group includes a design-build construction company (B.D. Stevens Ltd.), a ready-mix concrete supplier, long-term care homes, a commercial door and frame supplier, various commercial real estate properties, and more.

The Safety Advisor will support Stevens Group operations within Halifax Regional Municipality, with occasional travel within Nova Scotia and New Brunswick as required.

Role Description

Working alongside the existing Safety Advisor and operational leaders, the Safety Advisor will help strengthen and align health and safety programs across Stevens Group. You will identify gaps between written programs and day-to-day practices, work with company teams to implement improvements, and support consistent safety standards.

The role combines office-based program work with practical field support, with construction as a key focus. You will learn how each business operates and work with its leaders and safety resources to address its needs. You will also support the continued use and optimization of SALUS, including forms, records and document management.

Your Core Responsibilities

  • Review and update safety programs, manuals, policies and procedures to reflect operational needs and applicable requirements.
  • Visit sites and observe operations to understand how safety programs work in practice.
  • Identify gaps and work with managers, supervisors and employees to implement practical improvements.
  • Collaborate with the existing Safety Advisor and company-level safety resources to improve consistency across the group.
  • Support site-specific safety planning, inspections, hazard identification and follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Help coordinate safety training, maintain training records and communicate program updates.
  • Keep safety documentation accessible and help employees understand and apply relevant procedures.
  • Support supervisors and employees in using SALUS effectively.
  • Build trust with field and office teams, providing constructive guidance and reinforcing safety expectations.

Your Qualifications

You’re a motivated self-starter who takes initiative, manages priorities and follows through on improvements. You combine practical safety knowledge with an approachable, collaborative style and the confidence to work independently, and reinforce expectations.

  • Experience: 3–5 years of Health & Safety experience, ideally in construction, or relevant manufacturing experience or a background in operations would be a strong asset.
  • Education: Training or education in Health & Safety. A National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation or other relevant safety certification or designation is preferred.
  • Skills: Strong communication and organizational skills, with comfort using digital systems. SALUS experience would be an asset.
  • Other: A clean driving record and the ability to travel as required.

Why Join Stevens Group?

With exposure to multiple companies and varied environments, your work will remain engaging and rewarding, allowing you to develop as a safety professional while making a real impact on workplace culture and safety outcomes.
