Original job description
We are seeking an Actuarial Associate to join our Property & Casualty Actuarial team. This role builds on core actuarial expertise in pricing, reserving, and portfolio analytics, while taking on increased responsibility for leadership, project ownership, and management-facing decision support.
The successful candidate will work closely with underwriting, finance, claims, and IT stakeholders, lead components of actuarial studies and regulatory deliverables, and play a key role in advancing analytical tools, methodologies, and business insights. This position is well suited for an actuary who has achieved ACAS and is progressing toward fellowship-level responsibilities.
We welcome applications from candidates in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and across Ontario. Hybrid work arrangements are available for qualified candidates residing in Ontario.
Compensation for this position is based on a number of factors, including location, labour market conditions, external market benchmarks, internal pay equity, and the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, experience, and expected performance in the role. The anticipated salary range for this position is $94,000 - $135,000. Candidates whose expectations fall outside this range are still welcome to apply.
What you will be doing
- Lead actuarial analyses related to pricing, reserving, forecasting, and profitability for Personal and/or Commercial Lines portfolios.
- Take ownership of actuarial projects from planning through delivery, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with business objectives.
- Guide the development, validation, and refinement of rating models, loss models, and experience studies using internal and external data
- Lead or co-lead quarterly and annual reserve reviews, including assumption setting, results interpretation, and documentation.
- Prepare and present actuarial results, insights, and recommendations to management and senior stakeholders.
- Support management, regulatory, and financial reporting by reviewing actuarial exhibits and ensuring consistency with standards and expectations
- Analyze loss experience, rate adequacy, and portfolio performance to identify risks, opportunities, and emerging trends
- Collaborate cross-functionally with underwriting, claims, finance, and IT to support strategic initiatives and business decisions
- Facilitate meetings, guide discussions, and communicate actuarial implications to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Mentor and review work produced by actuarial team, providing feedback and supporting professional development.
- Champion continuous improvement by enhancing actuarial tools, automating processes, and strengthening analytical frameworks
- Minimum of 5-7 years of actuarial experience within the Property & Casualty insurance industry
- Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline
- ACAS designation completed, with active progress toward FCAS (or equivalent)
- Strong command of actuarial methods, loss modeling, credibility theory, and insurance fundamentals
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and at least one analytical or programming language such as SQL, R, Python, SAS, or VBA
- Experience working with large datasets, actuarial systems, and complex analytical environments
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of deliverables and drive projects to completion
- Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and structured problem-solving skills
- Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
- Confident communicator with the ability to present complex concepts clearly to management and business partners
In your first year, you will have established yourself as a trusted actuarial partner, independently leading pricing and/or reserving initiatives and delivering actionable insights to management. You will contribute meaningfully to actuarial cycles and regulatory requirements, take accountability for project outcomes, and add value through sound judgment, effective leadership, and continuous enhancement of actuarial processes and tools.
