Position Type: Full-Time / Contract – November 2026 – March 31, 2027

Reports To: Facilities Manager

About FNTI (First Nations Technical Institute)

FNTI is an Indigenous-owned and governed post-secondary institution dedicated to serving Indigenous learners. Established in 1985, FNTI has graduated over 4,000 students through certificate, diploma, and degree programs delivered in partnership with Ontario’s colleges and universities.

As a First Nation-mandated, not-for-profit, and registered charitable organization accredited by the Indigenous Advanced Education and Skills Council (IAESC), FNTI delivers a range of post-secondary programming grounded in Indigenous knowledge and community connection. Through its community-driven and intensive delivery model, FNTI enables learners to remain connected to their families and communities while pursuing meaningful educational and career pathways.

Since the Indigenous Institute Act, 2017, FNTI has advanced the development of independently accredited degree programs, created by Indigenous people, for Indigenous people. Programming is delivered from its main campus in Tyendinaga on the Bay of Quinte, as well as virtually.

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Manager, this position is responsible for performing a wide variety of maintenance, cleaning, planning, equipment operations to ensure facilities are safe, clean, well maintained and operational.

Key responsibilities include supporting the daily opening and/or closing of the facilities and upholding strict health and safety standards to ensure the site is always safe and ready to operate.

The Facilities/Maintenance Tech works closely with the facilities team. The Facilities/Maintenance Tech also provides support to the Facilities Manager in the purchase of relevant supplies, products and services.

Key Responsibilities

Coordination:

Development and implementation of maintenance and custodial practices;
Implements facility plans and provides temporary operational coverage during manager absences.

Maintenance:

Carries out day-to-day tasks associated with the facilities maintenance program to extend the lifespan of the building assets and systems;
Respond to and troubleshoot any issues, taking action to resolve and repair;
Inspects equipment to identify and arrange repair or replacement needs;
Performs and/or reports minor facility repairs and maintenance issues in close consultation with the Facilities Manager;
Oversees general property maintenance, actively executing seasonal and inclement weather responses in place (e.g., snow/ice removal, storm readiness, runway lights).

Administrative:

Ensures all paperwork and documentation are kept up-to-date and accurately completed;
In coordination with the Facilities Manager, and assigned tasks, serves as a link between campus visitors, learners, and staff and the facilities team;
Support the Facilities Manager in the administration of the controlled entry, alarms and CC tv, ensuring compliance with policy, and health and safety procedures.

Health and Safety:

Promotes safe work practices in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety and FNTI Policy;
Identifies and report unsafe conditions.
Advises staff on security procedures;
Responds to urgent/emergency concerns;
Participates in the team response to emergency alarm calls and when necessary; supports on-site interactions with emergency personnel.

Secondary Functions and Operational Support

Monitors facility cleanliness and provides secondary coverage/support to the Caretaker in executing daily cleaning routines;
Test and evaluates the effectives of new cleaning products;
Supports inventory control workflows for cleaning and facility supplies;
Actively monitors the campus to ensure completion of standard cleaning tasks and addresses any outstanding needs if noticed.
Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Secondary School diploma or equivalent
Experience with industrial /office cleaning procedures
Valid Class G, Ontario, driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract
Demonstrated technical/mechanical aptitude and ability
Knowledge of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Dependable, bondable
An acceptable Vulnerable Sector Check
Valid CPR and first aid

Conditions of Employment

Willing and able to travel occasionally and work overtime as required.
Successful candidates must provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
Successful candidates must provide a clean driver’s abstract.
Must be legally entitled to work in Ontario, Canada.
