Job Description
The Principal Process Engineer – Power Projects provides process and thermal-cycle engineering leadership for gas-turbine-based simple-cycle, combined-cycle, and cogeneration projects, proposals, and studies. The role combines subject-matter expertise, project execution leadership, and business development support. The successful candidate will develop and optimize competitive plant configurations, lead process engineering execution, advise clients and project teams, and help shape practical, lean execution strategies for power projects from early development through commissioning. The position is primarily office-based, with periodic travel to client offices, supplier facilities, and/or project sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead process engineering for power-project studies, feasibility work, configuration studies, FEED, proposals, and EPC execution.
- Develop and recommend cost-effective plant configurations for simple-cycle, combined-cycle, and cogeneration facilities, including gas turbine, HRSG, steam turbine, condenser, cooling, fuel gas, water/steam, and related balance-of-plant systems.
- Develop and optimize thermal-cycle models and plant performance using Thermoflow GTPRO/GTMASTER or equivalent tools; interpret model outputs and communicate design trade-offs clearly.
- Lead the preparation and review of heat and material balances, process flow diagrams, utility summaries, equipment and line design criteria, process datasheets, control philosophies, operating narratives, and performance calculations.
- Establish process design bases, margins, guarantees, and interfaces; support performance testing requirements and application of relevant performance test codes.
- Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinate closely with mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and controls, civil/structural, procurement, construction, and commissioning functions.
- Plan process-engineering work, develop estimates and schedules, forecast staffing, assign and check work, monitor progress, and deliver within scope, budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Review supplier proposals and technical data; support major-equipment selection, technical bid evaluations, vendor alignment, and flow-down of performance and schedule requirements.
- Identify technical and execution risks and develop practical mitigation strategies, including those associated with performance guarantees, schedule guarantees, and major equipment interfaces.
- Support commissioning, start-up, performance testing, troubleshooting, and resolution of field issues, as required.
- Serve as a power-process subject-matter expert, provide technical guidance and quality oversight, and mentor less-experienced engineers.
- Support business development and proposal preparation by developing technical approaches, execution strategies, estimates, schedules, and proposal narratives.
- Participate in client presentations and technical discussions, provide high-value advice during project development, and build trusted relationships with clients, licensors, suppliers, and partners.
- Promote fit-for-purpose, lean work processes appropriate to the power market while maintaining applicable quality, safety, regulatory, and company requirements.
- Accredited bachelor’s degree, or global equivalent, in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 15 years of relevant engineering experience, including substantial experience with gas-turbine-based power projects.
- Demonstrated experience leading process engineering for simple-cycle, combined-cycle, and/or cogeneration projects through study, FEED, proposal, or EPC phases.
- Strong knowledge of power-plant thermal cycles and the integration of gas turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, condensers, cooling systems, fuel systems, and associated balance-of-plant systems.
- Hands-on capability in power-cycle configuration, modelling, and optimization using Thermoflow software or equivalent.
- Ability to lead technical work, resolve complex problems, make sound independent recommendations, and manage multiple priorities within demanding project schedules.
- Effective written, verbal, presentation, and client-facing communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with clients, suppliers, contractors, management, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Working knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and industry practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer registration, or eligibility for registration, in Canadian provinces.
- Experience with major gas turbine OEM suppliers and familiarity with current gas turbine classes and product offerings.
- Experience with industrial steam hosts and integration of cogeneration facilities with refinery, petrochemical, mining, or other industrial processes.
- Field experience in construction, commissioning, start-up, operations, and/or performance testing.
- Experience supporting competitive lump-sum EPC proposals and understanding of power-market contracting strategies, commercial terms, and execution risks.
- Experience with emissions-control systems, grid and electrical-study interfaces, water treatment, air-cooled or water-cooled condensing systems, and decarbonization options applicable to power generation.
- Previous experience as a Process Lead, Area Lead, Engineering Manager, or comparable technical leadership role.
