Contracrt Duration: 12 months

Daily Responsibilities:

The Staff Designer - Product Experience is an individual contributor with proven expertise in interaction design, visual design, and business strategy who advances the design practice. They demonstrate deep domain knowledge, facilitating innovative solutions while navigating complexity and ambiguity. They think strategically and operationally, maintaining hands-on design excellence while shaping product strategy and business decisions. They establish metrics and support the team to deliver repeatable successful outcomes. They communicate with clarity to design and executive audiences, translating design impact into business value.

Key Responsibilities

Artifact Creation & Execution (40%)

Leads design initiatives of medium-to-high complexity requiring partnership across teams and business units
Creates rich prototypes, and complex user flows demonstrating range across multiple touchpoints across web, mobile, and editorial experiences
Provides thought leadership on content creation (iconography, information graphics, imagery, data visualization)
Manages processes, governance, and sharing of design documentation throughout its lifecycle
Takes ownership of developing brand-forward digital experiences that maintain consistency with RBC's brand value proposition while pushing creative boundaries
Ensures all interactive patterns and visual displays follow accessibility and inclusive design principles
Conducts advanced design testing and validation informed by business objectives

Design Strategy & Business Alignment (30%)

Connects design decisions to business objectives, market position, and organizational strategy
Provides design direction and oversight to ensure craft excellence aligned to design systems
Successfully presents design strategy to executive stakeholders and incorporates their feedback into design iterations
Advocates for human-centric design process with Business and Product partners
Identifies knowledge gaps, makes research recommendations, and facilitates application of research insights to design solutions
Establishes and tracks metrics demonstrating design's contribution to business outcomes (conversion, engagement, customer satisfaction)
Research UI behaviour and visual-spatial strategies in the competitive landscape
Performs competitive design audits pertinent to specific design or business goals

Collaboration and Partnerships (15%)

Breaks down complex topics and presents effectively to broad audiences and senior stakeholders through clear storytelling and compelling rationale
Advocates for client needs while balancing business objectives, using conceptual thinking and marketing principles to inform design decisions
Collaborates with Business, Product, and Research peers to create functional partnerships
Empowers teams to succeed with shared vision and removes obstacles

AI Experimentation & Innovation (10%)

Contributes new practice examples, innovations, and proofs-of-concept from research and experiments
Actively experiments with AI tools and methodologies in design practice
Identifies opportunities to unlock new creative possibilities and modernize workflows
Research emerging design strategies and technologies in financial services

Design Practice Contribution (5%)

Develops design patterns and standards that scale across products
Contributes new approaches and insights to advance the design practice
Shares insights and shows thought leadership via presentations and communications
Aids in sourcing and recruiting high-performing talent

Negotiation & Compromise: Balancing creative vision with technical constraints (engineering feasibility) and strict business requirements.
Comfort with Ambiguity: Defining root problems from vague briefs and steering teams forward when project parameters change rapidly.
