Due to continued growth, our client is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Customs Specialist to join their dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with international trade regulations, managing customs documentation, and facilitating smooth cross-border shipments. Your expertise will help optimize our import/export processes, reduce delays, and support global sourcing and distribution efforts. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to process improvements within a fast-paced high volume logistics environment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Customs Compliance & Entry Filing
- Prepare and submit accurate customs entries for shipments arriving from Asia into the U.S. and Canada.
- Review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and other import documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure proper classification (HTS/HS codes), valuation, and duty/tax calculation in accordance with U.S. CBP and CBSA regulations.
- File entries electronically through ACE (U.S.) and CADEX (Canada).
Client & Carrier Coordination
- Communicate with clients regarding entry status, documentation requirements, and compliance issues.
- Coordinate with freight forwarders, ocean carriers, and airlines to ensure smooth cargo release and on-time delivery.
- Advise clients on import regulations, duty reduction programs, and tariff mitigation strategies.
Regulatory Compliance & Recordkeeping
- Stay current on customs laws, Free Trade Agreements (e.g., USMCA/CUSMA), PGA (Partner Government Agencies) requirements, and other trade compliance regulations.
- Maintain accurate import records and ensure timely entry audits and post-entry corrections when necessary.
- Monitor and respond to CBP/CBSA holds, examinations, and requests for information.
Team & Process Support
- Collaborate with warehouse and logistics teams to ensure documentation accuracy and compliance with company SOPs.
- Collaborate with Company head office located in China and North American head office located in Vancouver, BC.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, international business, or a related field.
- Certification: Professional credentials, such as a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) is nice to have but not required
- Experience: 3 or more years working in import/export operations, logistics, or trade compliance.
- Knowledge: Deep understanding of tariff regulations, trade acts, and valuation methods.
- Tech Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and specialized customs management or enterprise software.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual Mandarin is an asset.
