Original job description

FVB Energy Inc. is an integrated, global engineering firm that has been at the forefront of district energy innovation since our offices opened in 1980. Now, over 45 years later we have become one of the largest dedicated District Energy engineering consultant companies in North America and are recognized world-wide as setting the standard for International Best Practices in District Energy, Decarbonization, Steam-to-Hot Water Conversion and Combined Heat and Power (CHP). With offices in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Minneapolis, Washington DC, London (UK) and multiple offices in Sweden, FVB combines a global presence with local solutions.

FVB’s successful track record of engineering and business experience includes everything from conceptual and detailed design to implementation and operational support, with hands-on experience in a variety of technologies and solutions. FVB has executed numerous district energy systems (DES) projects, and guided municipalities, communities, and campuses in the creation of over 75% of the district energy systems operating today in North America. We have extensive experience working with system owners to transform and modernize their district energy system infrastructure, from pre-feasibility stages to design and construction support, operational support, and supporting asset replacement strategies.

Job Summary:

The paramount goal of our company is to use our experience and expertise to help clients make wise technical and business decisions about production and use of thermal and electric energy in a way that minimizes or eliminates carbon emissions. We are heavily focused on analysis, planning and design for decarbonization of district energy systems. FVB provides a unique and specialized resource to meet client needs because we combine deep engineering experience with an extensive understanding of the business and financial elements of sustainable energy systems.

At FVB, we believe that exceptional projects are built through innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous improvement. We’re seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Designer who enjoys taking ownership of their work, contributing from concept through construction, and helping deliver coordinated, high-quality solutions alongside a passionate multidisciplinary team.

While design excellence remains at the heart of this role, the opportunity extends well beyond project delivery. You’ll be encouraged to contribute to the evolution of our design processes, investigate and implement new technologies, improve project workflows, and help develop the systems, standards, and resources that support our team’s long-term success. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys not only designing projects, but also helping shape how great projects are delivered.

FVB is seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Designer to join our growing team, ideally in our Toronto office. Candidates near our Vancouver, Ottawa or Edmonton offices are also encouraged to apply. Our project teams work across all of our Canadian offices, so the right person will be part of the team wherever they are based. The ideal candidate has solid experience producing coordinated mechanical designs in Revit and AutoCAD for HVAC, piping or energy projects, and works closely with engineers and project managers to take projects from concept through construction.

The position requires a candidate who:

Is comfortable working on multiple projects at different stages at any given time
Possesses excellent communication and time management skills
Is self-motivated and able to work as part of a team or individually

Conduct site visits and field surveys of existing conditions to support design and construction.
Apply relevant codes and standards in design, including provincial building codes, CSA B51, ASME B31 piping codes, and ASHRAE and NFPA standards.
Support construction phase services, including drawing revisions, addenda and record drawings.
Contribute to the improvement of FVB’s design processes, CAD/BIM standards, templates and content libraries, and help evaluate and implement new technologies and workflows.
Help ensure quality standards and project deadlines are met, and build strong working relationships with design leads, project managers, clients and other team members.
