Original job description

Are you inspired by challenging the status quo? Do you thrive in collaborative environments that drive results? If so, Gates could be for you.

Gates is a leading manufacturer of application-specific fluid power and power transmission solutions. We push the boundaries of material science to engineer solutions that continually exceed customer expectations.

Let's simplify it, think belts and hoses. Found in motorcycles, conveyor belts, cars, tractors, blenders, vacuum cleaners, bicycles, & 3D printers just to name a few. Because why not do it all?

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Pliot Plant Machinist / Technician is a highly skilled, hands‑on contributor responsible for programming, setup, and operation of advanced 5‑axis CNC machining centers to support prototype and low‑volume production of precision components for electric water pumps used in data‑center cooling applications and accessory drive tensioners. This role requires expertise in toolpath creation using Mastercam (or equivalent CAM software), strong problem‑solving abilities, and an innovative mindset.

The successful candidate will work closely with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and the Tool Room team to ensure efficient machining strategies, high‑quality component output, and continuous improvement in manufacturing methods. This position will also support and provide leadership on second shift, ensuring smooth operations, technical guidance, and adherence to safety, quality, and scheduling requirements.

This is not a machine‑tending role; it is a creative, technical position within a high‑end machining group where craftsmanship, precision, and initiative are essential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Programming
  • Scheduling/ Coordination with Product Engineering
  • Coordination of Outside Coater / Heat Treat / Secondary Operations / Shipments

  • Setting up / proving toolroom programs (prototype). Problem solving production CNC to reduce DT
  • Hands on fabrication, tool preventative maintenance, chip removal etc

Requirements and Preferred Skills

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a recognized Ontario machining or tool & die apprenticeship OR equivalent blend of education and extensive CNC machining experience.
  • Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) in General Machinist (429A) or Tool & Die Maker (430A) preferred.
  • Minimum 7–10 years CNC machining experience, including 5‑axis milling.
  • Experience running HAAS / Fanuc / Matsuura Fanuc controls
  • Knowledge using Renishaw and Blum probing
  • Strong knowledge of machining principles, GD&T, cutting tools, workholding, and materials.
  • Experience in prototype, R&D, aerospace, motorsports, or high‑precision environments preferred.
  • Experience coordinating outsourced processes (heat treat, coatings, grinding, EDM) is an asset.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Expert ability to program complex toolpaths including 3+2 and full 5‑axis strategies.
  • Strong capability in designing/validating workholding for small‑component machining.
  • Proficient in CNC setup, troubleshooting, offsets, probing cycles, and first‑article validation.
  • Ability to read/interpret complex drawings, GD&T, and solid models.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to support and mentor second‑shift team members when needed

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Regular standing, walking, bending, and reaching during machine operation.
  • Frequent lifting up to 40 lbs of materials, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Safe work around moving machinery, coolant systems, and handling equipment.
  • Fine motor skills required for measurement and detailed finishing tasks.
  • PPE required: safety footwear, glasses, and hearing protection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Advanced machining environment with 5‑axis mills and precision tooling.
  • Exposure to machining noise, coolant mist, and typical tool‑room conditions.
  • Work primarily in climate‑controlled shop with collaboration in engineering and quality labs.
  • Second‑shift work required with responsibility for coordinating operations.
  • Fast‑paced environment with frequent prototype builds and evolving priorities.
