Job Description Summary

The energy transition drives an unprecedented growth in demand for and generation of electricity. High voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems play a key role in connecting remote and offshore renewables and reinforcing AC grids. GE Vernova Grid Systems Integration business line offers control and protection solutions for Line Commutated Converter (LCC) HVDC valve technologies. The "brain" of these stations consists of control and protection systems that ensure efficient, safe, and reliable operation.

The control system is modelled and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, following existing functional requirements and internal development standards. Development follows an agile methodology (Scrum framework) with JIRA for backlog management and GitHub for configuration management.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

System level requirements and test specifications capture
Develop, implement, and debug control algorithms for HVDC converter functions (e.g., Power control, converter control, reactive power control and startup/shutdown control) in MATLAB/Simulink as per GE Vernova modelling guidelines.
Design and implement test harness with automatic assessment to validate at unit level and Model in Loop level.
Integrate functional blocks in the converter control units based on pre-defined control requirements and interface specifications.
Participate in code generation workflows using MATLAB Embedded Coder, ensuring compliance with in-house software architecture and coding standards.
Perform model-in-the-loop (MIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) to validate integration of functions according to the project plan.
Collaborate with system engineers, functional designers, and testers in agile sprints, ensuring tasks are tracked and documented in JIRA.
Contribute to peer reviews, unit testing, and integration sessions to ensure model quality and maintainability.
Manage version control and branching activities through GitHub Enterprise.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Control, or Software Engineering.
Minimum 5 years of experience in model-based design for control systems using MATLAB/Simulink.

Desired Characteristics

Proven experience with HVDC systems or power electronics control, ideally with LCC (CSC) technology.
Familiarity with HVDC control concepts (firing angle control, power control, reactive power control, protection methods.)
Experience in code generation (Embedded Coder or TargetLink) and integration of generated code into real-time control platforms, with knowledge in IEC61850.
Proficiency in version control tools (Git/GitHub) and collaborative workflows (branching, pull requests, merge handling).
Experience working in agile teams using JIRA or similar tools.
Strong analytical and debugging skills, attention to detail in model implementation.
A strong team player with a collaborative approach, capable of working effectively within medium to large-sized teams.
Good communication skills in English (written and verbal).
Previous participation in HVDC or FACTS control/protection development projects.
Familiarity with real-time simulation (HIL platforms like RTDS, OPAL-RT).
Experience with continuous integration pipelines (MATLAB GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar).
Approved Simulink models for assigned functions, compliant with internal guidelines.
Unit Test evidence and verification reports (MIL/SIL).
Contribution to system-level integration builds and sprint reviews.
Weekly progress updates via JIRA sprint dashboards.
