About GenCore Utilities Ltd
At GenCore Utilities Ltd., we power communities through innovative, sustainable, and technically advanced solutions across the telecommunications, utility, and energy sectors. Our design and engineering teams are at the forefront of network modernization, delivering projects that connect people and infrastructure efficiently and responsibly.
Position Summary
GenCore Utilities Ltd. is seeking a Civil Engineer to design and coordinate site infrastructure for substations, BESS facilities, utility corridors and other energy and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will develop practical, constructible civil designs from concept through detailed engineering, permitting, construction support and as-built documentation.
The role will work closely with electrical, structural, geotechnical and environmental specialists to resolve site constraints and deliver coordinated design packages that meet client and approving authority requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop site layouts, grading plans, earthworks designs, access roads, drainage systems and underground servicing for utility and energy facilities.
- Prepare drainage and stormwater calculations, erosion and sediment control plans, design briefs and supporting technical reports.
- Interpret surveys, geotechnical investigations, environmental constraints and existing utility records; identify missing information and coordinate further investigations.
- Coordinate equipment pad elevations, foundations, cable trenches, duct banks, retaining structures and oil containment interfaces with the responsible specialists.
- Prepare and review Civil 3D models, engineering drawings, specifications, quantity take-offs, cost estimates and civil construction packages.
- Support municipal and agency approvals, respond to review comments and coordinate civil design requirements with the permitting team.
- Coordinate with electrical and structural teams to resolve clearances, grading, drainage, access and underground utility conflicts.
- Conduct design checks and constructability reviews; review vendor and contractor submittals within the assigned civil scope.
- Provide construction support through site visits, RFIs, field reviews and documented design changes; prepare record drawings using verified field information.
- Plan civil deliverables and hours, communicate risks and changes to the project manager, and guide designers and junior staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited university.
- P.Eng. registration with Professional Engineers Ontario, or eligibility for registration in Ontario through another Canadian jurisdiction.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant civil engineering experience in site development, utilities, energy or industrial infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience in grading, drainage, stormwater management, earthworks, access roads and underground servicing.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and appropriate drainage or stormwater modelling software, such as PCSWMM, EPA SWMM or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of applicable municipal standards, approval processes, utility requirements and multidisciplinary design coordination.
- Experience with substations, BESS facilities, EPC projects or work around operating utility assets is an asset.
- Strong technical writing, design review and communication skills; valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to sites as required.
Salary Range
Annual base salary: CAD $90,000–$120,000, commensurate with utility EPC experience, project complexity and qualifications. Benefits and any bonus are additional.
