About GenCore Utilities Ltd.

At GenCore Utilities Ltd., we power communities through innovative, sustainable, and technically advanced solutions across the telecommunications, utility, and energy sectors. Our design and engineering teams are at the forefront of network modernization, delivering projects that connect people and infrastructure efficiently and responsibly.

Our team is seeking an Intermediate Telecom Designer to contribute to the development of telecom network designs that drive the delivery of FTTH and OSP infrastructure projects across Canada. In this role, you will transform survey data, GIS inputs, and engineering concepts into accurate, constructible plans that meet municipal and client standards. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including permitting, QA/QC, and field operations, to ensure every design is efficient, compliant, and ready for execution.

Key Responsibilities:

Design & Drafting

· Create and update telecom design packages, including plan and profile drawings, conduit layouts, cable design, cable routing, and as-built documentation using AutoCAD.

· Prepare basemap by integrating survey data, GIS layers, utility records, and field audit information.

· Prepare Municipal Consent (MC) permits, permit packages, construction notes, and supporting documentation for regulatory approval.

· Apply and maintain the GenCore and utility CAD standards, ensuring consistency in layering, annotation, symbology, and sheet formatting.

· Integrate survey data, field audits, and GIS information into base maps to produce clear, compliant design sets.

· Develop high-level and low-level designs (HLD/LLD) for FTTH, OSP, and ISP projects in alignment with client, utility, and municipal standards.

· Incorporate survey and geomatics inputs (LiDAR, RTK, IKE pole audits) and validate coordinate systems, scales, and reference frameworks.

· Demonstrate expertise in cable design, including cable sizing, routing optimization, duct bank configuration, and strand/tube assignment for fibre networks.

· Apply consistent layer, linetype, annotation, and symbology standards to ensure accuracy, clarity, and quality across all design deliverables.

Project Coordination

· Collaborate closely with the project manager and permitting team to deliver accurate and constructible designs.

· Review field sketches, redlines, and markups; integrate revisions into updated design packages.

· Support QA/QC reviews by performing detailed self-checks on geometry, title blocks, and metadata.

· Contribute to the preparation of IFC and as-built sets for construction and project closeout.

Collaboration & Learning

· Participate in design coordination meetings and contribute to design reviews.

· Learn and apply applicable standards and guidelines related to telecom and utility infrastructure.

· Continuously develop AutoCAD proficiency and knowledge of telecom network design principles.

· Utilize tools such as AutoCAD, ESRI ArcGIS, and client platforms (e.g., SpatialNET, IKE Office) for data integration and validation.

· Maintain organized project files, version control, and compliance with GenCore’s design and document control standards.

· Assist in developing and improving template libraries, detail sheets, and standard drawing practices.

· Document lessons learned and contribute to process optimization within the team.

Qualifications:

· 3–5 years of experience in telecom or utility design, with a focus on OSP/FTTH/ISP network design, cable design, and cable routing, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

· Post-secondary diploma or degree in Electrical, or Telecommunications Engineering Technology (or related discipline).

· Proficiency in AutoCAD (experience with Civil 3D, MicroStation, or GIS tools considered an asset).

· Understanding of municipal permitting standards and telecom symbology.

· Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with attention to detail.

· Experience with ESRI (GIS), NetX, SpatialNET, or SPIDA Calc is an asset.

· Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in design delivery.

The expected compensation: $55,000–$65,000 per year ($26.44 -$31.25 per hour).
