Original job description

Hi, we are ecobee.

ecobee introduced the world’s first smart Wi-Fi thermostat to help millions of consumers save money, conserve energy, and bring home automation into their lives. That was just the beginning. We continue our pursuit to create technology that brings peace of mind into the home and allows people to focus on the moments that matter most. We take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment, all while being part of the exciting, connected home revolution.

In 2021, ecobee became a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems. Generac introduced the first affordable backup generator and later created the category of automatic home standby generator. The company is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid. Together, we take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment.

Why we love to do what we do:

We’re helping build the world of tomorrow with solutions that improve everyday life while making a positive impact on the planet. Our products and services work in harmony to provide comfort, efficiency, and peace of mind for millions of homes and businesses. While we’re proud of what we’ve done so far, there’s still a lot we can do - and you can be part of it.

Join our extraordinary team.

We're a rapidly growing global tech company headquartered in Canada, in the heart of downtown Toronto, with an office in Leeds, UK, and remote ecopeeps in the US. We get to work with some of North America and UK's leading professionals. Our colleagues are proud to bring their authentic selves to work, confident that what we do is grounded in a greater purpose. We’re always looking for curious, talented, and passionate people to join our team.

Who’ll You Be Joining:

The Energy Services team’s vision is for thoughtful homes to work together for 100% clean and affordable energy. Our team is entirely focused on planet positivity, and you will be a key contributor in bringing that vision to life. eco+ has already helped millions of users use cleaner and cheaper energy and is growing fast to keep energy costs low for more homeowners across North America.

The eco+ product is used by more than 70 utility partners and is revolutionizing how the grid responds to peak demand, thanks to Machine Learning models that optimize comfort and energy savings for customers. At the heart of this is the Energy Control Platform (ECP), ecobee's API platform that enables utility partners to create and manage demand response and grid resiliency programs, dispatch events to enrolled smart thermostats, and manage thermostat groups at scale.

You would be joining as a member on a small but growing team, helping shape a culture that empowers the team to make great technical decisions, drive strategic choices, actively improve on our processes and mentor others.

You will work closely with Product and other engineering teams to shape the roadmap and consistently improve the platform, with occasional collaboration with marketing and sales partners.

The Energy Services team is highly data driven an is consistently focused on improving our culture and processes. You’ll benefit from monthly learning days, regular guest speakers from the energy industry, strategic offsites, as well as other opportunities for growth and development!

This role follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office work required on Wednesdays and Thursdays to support collaboration, and flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll:

Design, build, and evolve high-load, highly concurrent backend services that directly support ecobee’s products and business goals, including the Energy Control Platform (ECP), ecobee's API platform that powers demand response and grid resiliency programs for utility partners.
Use modern technologies to solve complex technical challenges at scale, with the flexibility to evaluate and adopt new tools when they meaningfully improve outcomes.
Contribute to and help shape ecobee’s engineering culture by sharing knowledge, learning from peers, and applying thoughtful engineering practices.
Influence technical direction and decision-making, with your ideas and contributions having a measurable impact on the company’s systems and objectives.

What You’ll Bring to the Table:

You have strong Go experience and are comfortable designing, implementing, and debugging microservices on Google Cloud Platform and/or AWS, along with both NoSQL and relational databases.
You leverage AI assisted development to move faster, improve quality and navigate unfamiliar codebase.
You continuously challenge yourself and the status quo, seeking better ways to solve complex problems. Systems design and architecture are areas where you’re comfortable and confident.
You value the craft of software development and actively practice automated testing, CI/CD, and sound design patterns.
You understand the full lifecycle of getting code to production, from review and merge through deployment in the cloud or a data center, and can identify opportunities to improve reliability and delivery.
You’re open to learning new technologies when it helps you deliver solutions more effectively.
You thrive on large, complex challenges and are comfortable working with issues of scale, concurrency, large data sets, security, redundancy, and failover, all key considerations for a successful IoT platform.
We also use Java, Python, and JavaScript, and value choosing the right tool for the job.
You care deeply about system stability and customer experience, which includes working with metrics, participating in a healthy on-call rotation, and building robust, resilient systems.
You prioritize the team by providing mentorship, support, and guidance, while helping focus efforts on the highest-impact work and supporting overall team well-being.

AI‑Assisted Development Expectations

Hands‑on experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, or similar) in real development workflows
Ability to validate AI output through testing, code review, and incremental rollout - understanding what was generated and why, not just whether it runs
Interest in turning AI usage into repeatable team leverage, not just personal productivity

Just so you know: The hired candidate will be required to complete a background check

What happens after you apply:

Application review. It will happen. By an actual person in Talent Acquisition. As we sometimes get upwards of 100+ applications for some roles, it can take a few days, but every applicant can expect a note regarding their application status.

Interview Process:

A 30-minute phone/video call with a member of Talent Acquisition
A 1-hour virtual interview with the Hiring Manager: expect technical, behavioural, and situational questions.
The technical interview: This will be a two-hour virtual interview where you will meet folks from the team. Expect coding exercises and a system design exercise.
