About Us:
General Fusion (NASDAQ: GFUZ) is a fusion technology development company. The Company aims to deliver economical, carbon-free fusion energy through its practical Magnetized Target Fusion (“MTF”) technology, an engineering-driven approach to fusion energy. General Fusion's commercialization program is anchored by LM26, the world's first commercially relevant-scale MTF demonstration machine. The Company is working toward the commercial deployment of fusion power in the mid-2030s. General Fusion is the first publicly listed fusion company and TIME’s No. 1 GreenTech Company of 2026. For more information, visit generalfusion.com or follow General Fusion on LinkedIn, YouTube, and X.
Position Overview:
The Structural Mechanical Engineer / Stress Analyst will be responsible for the structural integrity and dynamic structural performance of large-scale machine systems, with a primary focus on supporting LM26 operations and upgrades within a cross-functional team. You will perform transient and nonlinear structural analyses on large, complex assemblies subjected to extreme dynamic loading, and turn those results into design decisions that keep LM26 safe, reliable, and performing.
This role focuses primarily on simulation and analysis, with opportunities to support the design, assembly, instrumentation, and testing of apparatus to validate models and strengthen understanding of system behaviour.
Responsibilities:
- Perform transient, nonlinear structural analyses (stress, strain, fatigue, buckling, contact, impact, and dynamic response) of large machine structures and components in support of LM26 activities.
- Analyze and interpret simulation results, translating findings into clear, actionable recommendations that guide design decisions and improve system performance.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary experts to incorporate multi-physics insights and develop accurate, well-informed boundary conditions for simulation models.
- Support LM26 operations through failure investigations and rapid-turnaround assessments of proposed modifications and repairs.
- Prepare high-quality documentation and present technical results to stakeholders at varying levels of technical depth.
- Contribute to team development by sharing expertise, participating actively in design reviews, and helping refine and implement effective engineering processes.
- Increase the team’s overall simulation capabilities by developing new models and methods and validating them through experimentation.
- Support the mechanical design, instrumentation, and operation of test apparatus, as required.
- Correlate test and operational data (e.g., strain gauges, accelerometers, displacement measurements) with simulation results to improve model fidelity.
- Other tasks / duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering or engineering physics (with mechanical specialization), or a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent industry experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical simulation
- Extensive experience setting up and running transient and nonlinear finite element models using software such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, Abaqus, and COMSOL.
- Strong knowledge of structural mechanics, statics, and dynamics, including vibration, impact, and shock loading.
- Experience with nonlinear behaviour, including large deformation, contact, plasticity, and material models at elevated temperatures and high strain rates.
- Sound judgment on modelling strategy for large, complex assemblies, including the trade-off between model fidelity and solve time.
- Working knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
- Proficiency in data analysis and post-processing using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
- Strong engineering judgment, with the ability to simplify complex problems, sanity-check with hand calculations, and focus on key physical drivers.
- Strong understanding of engineering materials, failure modes, and fabrication methods (including welding and bolted joints).
- Demonstrated experience working with design teams to deliver solutions to technically challenging problems, and incorporating simulation results into design recommendations.
- Experience addressing novel engineering problems with limited established guidance or precedent.
- Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines in a rapidly changing environment.
- Working knowledge of CAD software; SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM preferred.
Assets:
- Experience with multi-physics simulation, such as fluid-structure interaction, electromagnetic-structural (Lorentz force) coupling, or thermal-structural coupling.
- Experience with explicit dynamics and high-energy or impulsive loading.
- Experience with experimental validation, including strain gauge instrumentation and high-speed data acquisition.
- Registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer, or on-track to complete registration.
The typical hiring range for this position is CA$95,000 - CA$115,000 annually. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
What We Offer:
- Hybrid work environment
- Four weeks’ vacation
- Ten personal days
- Comprehensive benefits package
- RRSP Contribution
- Support for professional development
- Great company culture – social events, weekly lunch program, bike rides, Sun Run, etc.
Applications:
We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
We welcome applicants with relevant engineering experience. Candidates who hold P.Eng or EIT credentials will be hired under the Engineer title. Those without these credentials will be assigned an equivalent title that matches the scope of their position.
General Fusion is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, or age.
