Original job description

Who we are

For decades, insurance software has been built around rigid forms, portals and call centers that create friction for customers and drag for teams. Even as AI has advanced, most insurance work is still manual, slow and spread across disconnected systems.

General Magic builds AI agents that handle quoting, follow-ups, document collection, verification, claims intake and broker communication, connected directly to carrier, MGA and broker systems. We've raised $7.2M USD from Radical Ventures, a16z and several AI luminaries. We reward people who thrive with high autonomy, love shipping quickly and want real ownership. We work onsite in Toronto five days a week.

The role

You'll own the cloud platform General Magic runs on: reliable, secure, observable infrastructure that lets our engineers ship fast and meets the bar carriers and regulators expect when handling sensitive insurance data.

In this role, you will

  • Run our infrastructure on GCP and Cloud Run as code, with Terraform and solid CI/CD

  • Instrument services with metrics, logs and traces using OpenTelemetry, and set alerts and SLOs

  • Lead incident response, drive down latency and recovery time, and run postmortems

  • Design and tune databases, APIs and data pipelines for scale and reliability

  • Own IAM, secrets and encryption, and drive SOC 2 and PIPEDA readiness

  • Keep cloud costs in check without slowing the team down

For this role, you should have

  • Deep experience running cloud infrastructure as code, ideally on GCP

  • A strong reliability and observability mindset

  • Solid backend and database fundamentals

  • Practical security instincts and familiarity with SOC 2 or PIPEDA

  • A pragmatic, enabling approach: you automate everything and help other engineers move faster

$120-200k, equity, new MacBook Pro and more.
