Original job description
The opportunity
Our client is hiring a Financial Controller to lead the day-to-day finance and accounting function and help build the financial infrastructure for its next stage of growth. You will bring strong accounting judgment, hands-on leadership, and a process improvement mindset to a growing business navigating increasing operational complexity. You will lead and develop the finance team, strengthen financial reporting and controls, and help modernize processes and systems.
This is a full-time, in-office role based in Winnipeg, Manitoba with an expectation to work on site five days per week.
Why this role?
This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of a finance function and influence how it evolves as the business grows. You will work closely with the business, bringing practical judgment and structure to financial operations while helping shape processes, systems, and reporting.
You will also have the opportunity to develop a team, improve how finance operates, and strengthen the quality of insight available to business leaders. It is a role for someone who enjoys balancing hands-on accounting leadership with longer-term improvements that make a measurable difference.
You will:
- Lead accounting operations. You will oversee day-to-day accounting activities, ensuring financial transactions are recorded accurately, completely, and on time. You will lead month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and controls, ensuring the business has reliable financial information to support decisions.
- Elevate the team. You will manage, support, and mentor a small finance and accounting team that is eager to learn and ready for stronger structure. You will coach, answer questions, strengthen accounting knowledge, and help build a team environment grounded in clarity, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Challenge legacy processes. You will review current accounting, AP, AR, reporting, and control processes to understand what works, what creates manual effort, and what needs to change as the company grows. You will ask thoughtful questions, identify practical improvements, and help redesign processes to be more accurate, scalable, and efficient.
- Guide ERP decisions. You will play a key role in the planned ERP implementation, bringing a strong accounting lens to system and workflow decisions. You will help ensure financial data, transaction flows, controls, reporting, and process design support the business today and as it grows.
- Strengthen financial insight. You will help leaders interpret financial performance, cash flow, margins, and operational results, translating financial data into practical insights that support informed business decisions.
- Support scalable growth. You will help build the finance foundation needed to integrate future growth. You will support new entities, evolving processes, and increasing reporting complexity with sound accounting judgment, strong controls, and a practical understanding of how finance needs to scale.
You bring:
- The right level of ownership. You are comfortable in a small to mid-sized environment where strong judgment, hands-on execution, and practical leadership matter more than layers of process. You have seen what stronger financial processes, controls, and reporting can look like in a more complex business. You know how to bring structure without overengineering.
- The accounting depth. You may be an Accounting Manager, Controller, or finance professional ready to take on greater responsibility and contribute to a finance function’s evolution through systems transformation and process improvement. You are a CPA with strong technical accounting knowledge and a solid understanding of how transactions flow through the financial statements. You can assess accounting implications, apply sound judgment, and ensure financial information is accurate, reliable, and useful.
- The controllership experience. You have experience overseeing core accounting operations, including month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls. You bring the judgment to ensure these activities run effectively while balancing hands-on involvement with team leadership and continuous improvement.
- The business exposure. You understand the financial and operational realities of a growing business, ideally in distribution, manufacturing, product-based, or inventory-driven environments. Experience in both public accounting and industry is an asset.
- The process mindset. You are comfortable stepping into processes that have been in place for years and asking how they can work better. You can understand the current state, identify gaps, respectfully challenge assumptions, and introduce improvements that support accuracy, efficiency, controls, and scale.
- The leadership approach. You know how to guide and develop team members who are still building their confidence and capability. You are approachable, clear, and supportive, while also setting expectations and creating accountability. You can help people understand not just what needs to be done, but why it matters.
Compensation $100,000 to $120,000 per year plus bonus.
