Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our Instrumentation & Monitoring team. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Pre-Construction Condition Surveys (PCS), Noise and Vibration Monitoring, and Geotechnical Instrumentation & Monitoring (GIM) on major infrastructure and construction projects.

The successful candidate will be involved in both field operations and office-based technical work, supporting the installation, monitoring, data analysis, and reporting of instrumentation systems used to assess construction impacts on adjacent infrastructure and the public. This position is ideal for an EIT looking to build practical experience in heavy civil, tunnelling, transit, and municipal infrastructure projects.

Duties

Field Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation of geotechnical instruments, including vibrating wire piezometers, inclinometers, settlement monitoring points (SMPs), survey prisms, tilt meters, crack gauges, and other monitoring devices.
  • Conduct noise and vibration monitoring using sound level meters and vibration monitors in accordance with municipal by-laws, contract specifications, and applicable standards (e.g., MOECC, FTA, municipal noise by-laws).
  • Support Pre-Construction Condition Surveys (PCS), including site inspections, photographic documentation, and report preparation.
  • Perform routine and event-based monitoring readings using total stations, data loggers, and automated monitoring systems (AMTS).
  • Coordinate with contractors and project stakeholders to ensure safe access and proper instrument protection.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and maintaining monitoring equipment during construction.

Office Responsibilities

  • Process, review, and analyze monitoring data for settlement, vibration, noise, groundwater, and structural movement.
  • Prepare monitoring reports and plans
  • Maintain organized project documentation and data management systems.
  • Participate in project meetings and assist senior engineers with technical coordination and client communication.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Strong interest in geotechnical instrumentation, construction monitoring, and heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of construction drawings, survey principles, and basic geotechnical concepts.
  • Experience with monitoring equipment (e.g., total stations, vibration monitors, sound level meters, data loggers) is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Excel for data analysis and reporting
  • Programming knowledge an asset
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and construction environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
