Position Description
The Manager, Research
Services, Ethics and Compliance provides administrative leadership across
George Brown’s research programs. The incumbent leads a multidisciplinary team
and builds effective relationships with the Research Ethics Board (REB), research
institutes, academic faculties, researchers, students, administrative
departments, funders, government bodies, and external partners. The Manager
provides strategic and operational leadership to strengthen research
governance, institutional research capacity, and the quality and effectiveness
of research services, advancing a culture of scholarship, strengthens support
for researchers, partners, and students, and enhancing the impact, visibility,
and reputation of GB’s research and innovation activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team, setting priorities and improving research services, processes and resources; foster a collaborative, service-oriented, accountable, inclusive, and continuous-improvement culture within the team and across the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI).
- Maintain strong working relationships with senior leaders, researchers, research institutes, academic faculties, administrative departments, funders, government agencies, professional organizations, and industry, community, and academic partners.
Monitor changes in government, funder, regulatory, and institutional requirements and coordinate the timely implementation of resulting policy and operational changes; identify compliance and operational risks, advises on appropriate mitigation strategies, and implement measures within delegated authority. - Provide oversight of the REB function, working closely with the REB Chair and administrator to maintain timely, consistent, and compliant processes; maintain current knowledge of relevant ethics, integrity, privacy, and compliance requirements, provide accurate advice, guidance, and education to internal and external stakeholders.
Establishes and oversees research data and performance measurement practices to support effective collection, analysis, reporting, and use of data related to research contracts, funding programs, compliance, ethics, and research services, including performance measures, dashboards, and service metrics. - Design and administer internal research programs, ensuring programs are responsive to institutional priorities and effectively support research development and capacity.
Oversee the execution of institutional grant awards and research contracts, providing guidance and operational support to research teams and institutes to enable effective delivery of funded projects; identifying delays, emerging issues, or changes, and coordinate the timely completion of required actions or development of alternatives. - Respond to reporting requirements related to institutional research contracts and lead the completion of the reports in collaboration with research teams and institutes; liaise with funders and partners on requests, amendments, and other contractual matters as necessary.
- Lead the development and submission of institutional grant applications and support competitive project applications led by research teams and institutes as needed.
- Shape and continuously advance research services and programs, standards, processes, and communications in response to researcher, partner, and student needs; develop and deliver training and events on relevant matters that strengthen institutional research capacity and enhance the quality and impact of applied research.
- Liaise with the Libraries, Teaching and Learning Exchange, academic faculties, research institutes, and other ORI teams to provide coordinated support for researchers and integrate relevant research opportunities into curricular for students.
- Provide oversight for the development and distribution of knowledge translation and research communication materials, including success stories, project posters, event publications, research outputs, publications, and social media content.
- Other duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements
- A four-year bachelor’s degree in research administration, business or public administration, project management, health sciences, social sciences, education, or a related discipline. A master’s degree is an asset.
- Current TCPS 2: CORE certification, or the ability to obtain and maintain certification as a condition of the role.
- Specialized training or certification in research administration, research ethics or compliance, project management, research data management, or a related field is an asset.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in research administration, research ethics, research operations, grants and contracts administration, and compliance, with strong knowledge of research administration principles, practices, or processes.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing a multidisciplinary team and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with researchers, research leaders, administrators, senior management, government representatives, funders, and external partners.
- Experience developing, implementing, and continuously improving policies, procedures, guidelines, systems, and operational processes within a research or postsecondary environment.
- Experience supporting or administering research ethics review processes, with sound knowledge of research ethics principles, processes, and governance frameworks.
- Experience leading grant development, proposal development, or competitive research funding applications.
- Experience developing and improving research services, programs, or initiatives that respond to researcher, partner, or student needs and strengthen research capacity.
- Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting operational and program data, metrics, and performance information, with the ability to translate findings into actionable insights and improvements.
- Experience developing or overseeing knowledge translation, research communications, or research dissemination activities that enhance the visibility, uptake, and impact of research.
Skills and Attributes
- Strong knowledge of Canadian research ethics and governance, responsible conduct of research, and institutional research administration.
- Strong program, project and contract administration skills, with the ability to manage budgets, assess risks and use data to improve services.
- Sound judgment when handling sensitive or complex matters and building relationships with researchers, funders and institutional partners.
- Broad leadership skills managing a diverse team of experienced individuals.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
