About Us
GFL is one of the largest diversified environmental services company in North America, providing comprehensive solid waste management services from its platform of facilities throughout Canada and 18 U.S. states. Recognized by our signature fleet of bright green trucks and equipment, we offer a wide range of environmental and industrial services to businesses, communities and households, providing a consolidated and sophisticated approach to meeting our customers’ needs. One of the keys to our success lies in the diversity of our services and our ability to deliver robust integrated solutions, all from a single efficient company. We believe that, by providing safe, accessible and cost-effective solutions, we encourage greater environmental responsibility and allow our customers and the communities we serve to be Green For Life.
The Role
GFL Environmental is looking for a Human Resources Generalist to provide dedicated HR support across regional operations. Reporting to the HR Director, this role acts as a primary point of contact for operational leaders, supervisors, and front-line teams.
The ideal candidate brings a grounded, hands-on operational approach. You will balance day-to-day tactical execution with practical business partnership, coaching managers on leadership capabilities, resolving employee and labour relations matters, and ensuring consistent application of company policies, employment legislation, and collective agreements across field sites.
Key Responsibilities:
Employee Relations
- Provide day-to-day guidance to operational leaders on collective agreement administration, grievance handling, progressive discipline, and workplace conflict resolution.
- Conduct objective, thorough workplace investigations into employee complaints, policy breaches, and safety/compliance concerns; prepare defensible, fact-based investigation reports and action plans.
- Support the HR and Labour Relations leadership team in preparing grievance responses, arbitrations, and union contract negotiations.
- Ensure all actions, decisions, and documentation comply with relevant provincial Employment Standards, Human Rights legislation, and internal standards.
- Partner directly with site managers and supervisors to build frontline leadership capabilities, reinforcing manager ownership over team performance and accountability.
- Provide clear, consistent advice on policy interpretation, attendance management, performance documentation, and employee exits.
- Support regional workforce planning, identifying turnover trends and collaborating with operational leaders and talent acquisition teams to address staffing requirements.
- Assist with regional integration activities during mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to onboard teams smoothly and align operational workflows.
- Leverage HR metrics and operational data (turnover, absenteeism, overtime, safety incidents) to identify operational risks and recommend practical solutions to local leadership.
- Partner with Shared Services HR teams to operationalize corporate and regional initiatives, including annual compensation cycles, performance reviews, and training programs.
- Participate in regional or national HR projects, supporting operational change management and implementation at the field level.
- Lead employee engagement and local outreach initiatives that foster positive workplace culture and retention.
- Operational Agility: Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-site industrial or field operations environment where priorities change quickly.
- Labour Relations Credibility: Demonstrated experience navigating collective agreements, managing grievance procedures, and maintaining constructive working relationships with union representatives.
- Consultative Problem-Solving: A practical, objective approach to coaching managers, delivering direct feedback, and resolving complex interpersonal or operational challenges.
- Professional Communication: Strong written documentation skills, with experience preparing defensible investigation reports, labour briefing notes, policy guidelines, and leadership communications.
- Data-Informed Thinking: Comfort reviewing operational workforce data to identify patterns and inform decisions.
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations, Labour Relations, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience, ideally with direct exposure to unionized operating environments.
- CPHR designation (or working toward designation) is an asset.
- Strong, working knowledge of Canadian labour laws, provincial Employment Standards, and Human Rights codes.
- Proficient with HRIS platforms (Workday preferred) and Microsoft Office / Google Workspace applications.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to regional operating sites as needed (up to 30%).
Why join us? We believe in taking care of our team. Here is a snapshot of our total rewards you can expect:
- Health: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- Wellness: Employee Assistance Program, life insurance, and paid time-off
- Financial: RRSP matching, profit sharing and competitive wages
