Join our team of globally connected specialists to help solve complex transport challenges and experience groundbreaking projects from idea to delivery, and beyond.
Who are we looking for?
GHD is seeking an Engineering Co-op Student or Intern to join our Rail & Transit team for the Winter 2027 term and support the delivery of engineering consulting services for major transportation infrastructure projects across Ontario. This position can be based in our Toronto, Markham, or Mississauga office.
We are looking for a motivated student who is currently enrolled in an engineering or related post-secondary program and is interested in gaining practical experience in project coordination and project delivery within the rail and transit sector. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to a wide range of transit infrastructure projects, including commuter rail, heavy rail, light rail transit (LRT), bus rapid transit (BRT), stations, guideways, rail corridors, and other transit expansion initiatives. These project types align with the Rail & Transit practice's focus areas.
Working alongside experienced Project Managers and technical specialists, you will gain hands-on exposure to multiple stages of the project lifecycle, including project planning, design coordination, stakeholder engagement, procurement support, project controls, construction delivery, and contract administration. This work term offers an excellent opportunity to apply your academic knowledge, build practical skills, and explore a future career in infrastructure project delivery within GHD's growing Rail & Transit practice.
Be part of the dynamic culture! Our workplace thrives on a hybrid model, combining in-office collaboration and flexibility. Join us in office, three days a week to contribute, connect and excel in our vibrant environment.
Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
• Assist Project Managers and project team members with the planning, coordination, and delivery of rail and transit infrastructure assignments.
• Support coordination across multidisciplinary teams by tracking deliverables, deadlines, and follow-up actions.
• Help update project schedules, budgets, risk registers, action logs, and reporting tools under the guidance of experienced team members.
• Assist with project controls activities, including basic cost tracking, schedule monitoring, data entry, and performance reporting.
• Attend internal and external project meetings, take clear meeting minutes, document action items, and support follow-up activities.
• Support document control, quality checks, file organization, and the administration of project management systems.
• Assist with coordination activities involving transit agencies, municipalities, utility companies, regulatory authorities, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
• Support procurement and contract administration tasks, including organizing information for Requests for Proposals (RFPs), technical submissions, bid evaluations, and contract documentation.
• Prepare draft presentations, dashboards, status reports, spreadsheets, and other project materials for review.
• Conduct research and support proposal preparation, market research, and business development initiatives within the rail and transit sector.
• Participate in site visits, field observations, or project activities as required, following all applicable health and safety procedures.
• Contribute ideas to continuous improvement, lessons learned, digital delivery processes, and the use of project management tools.
What you will bring to the Team:
• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or diploma program in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Construction Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related discipline.
• Eligible to complete a co-op or internship work term during Winter 2027 through an accredited post-secondary institution.
• Previous co-op, internship, project, laboratory, design-team, or volunteer experience is considered an asset but is not required.
• Demonstrated interest in rail, transit, transportation, project management, project controls, or major infrastructure delivery.
• Basic understanding of engineering principles and an interest in learning about project scheduling, budgeting, risk management, and stakeholder coordination.
• Strong organizational, written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage assigned tasks, meet deadlines, ask questions, and work effectively in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
• Exposure to Power BI, Primavera P6, MS Project, SharePoint, AutoCAD, or similar engineering and project management tools is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of rail, transit, transportation, construction, or public infrastructure projects through coursework or extracurricular activities is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, professionalism, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn from feedback.
• Ability to participate in occasional site visits or travel to project locations, where required.
• A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle are considered assets where travel to project sites is required.
