Original job description

Ontario Plants Propagation (OP) is a leading North American plant propagation company focused on producing high-quality young vegetable and soft fruit plants for commercial greenhouse growers. As a critical supplier to the controlled environment agriculture sector, OP combines horticultural expertise, advanced growing capabilities, and a commitment to innovation to support a more resilient, productive, and sustainable food system.

Following the development of its state-of-the-art Glencoe greenhouse facility and significant capital investment, OP is entering an exciting next phase of growth and transformation. The organization is focused on optimizing operations, enhancing profitability, expanding capabilities, and strengthening its position in a market benefiting from growing demand for greenhouse-grown food production.

The Mandate

Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with ownership, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a central role in helping build a high-performing, scalable, and profitable organization. This is not a traditional finance leadership position focused solely on stewardship and reporting. It is an opportunity to become a true business partner and strategic leader, influencing critical decisions that will shape the future of the company.

The successful candidate will join at a pivotal point in OP's evolution. With substantial investments already made in infrastructure and growth, the organization is seeking a finance leader who can help unlock value by improving profitability, strengthening cash generation, enhancing decision-making capabilities, and building the financial and operational foundations needed to support long-term success.

For an executive who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, building capabilities, and creating lasting impact, this role offers a rare opportunity to influence strategy, strengthen culture, enhance performance, and leave a visible mark on a growing business.

Leadership and Stewardship

The company is seeking a CFO who leads with maturity and earns trust through action. This is not a role for someone who relies on title or tenure to get things done. More than just a technical financial leader, the successful candidate will be a thoughtful and credible executive who fosters trust, accountability, and collaboration across the organization and partners effectively with external stakeholders.

Operationally curious and highly intelligent, with a low-ego leadership style
Comfortable navigating ambiguity and complexity
A builder of high-performing teams and organizational culture
Results-oriented and accountable
An enabler of exceptional data-driven decision making
Collaborative, trusted, and relationship-focused
Energized by operational challenges and continuous improvement
An effective and transparent communicator

Ideal Background

The successful candidate will be a strategic and operational finance executive who enjoys complexity and thrives in a growth-oriented environment. They will bring both financial expertise and a passion for helping businesses improve performance and create value.

CPA designation required.
Proven track record of success as a CFO or senior finance executive within a complex operating environment with a minimum of 15 years, including optimizing and scaling organizations
Accomplished as a strategic business partner, advisor to the CEO and the senior leadership team
Hands-on and strategic capabilities in financial planning, forecasting, cash flow management, and business intelligence, driving operational improvements through financial insights and performance management.
Experience operating in asset-intensive, capital-intensive, or leveraged environments.
Track record of building high-performing teams and influencing leaders across an organization.
Experience in manufacturing, food production, agriculture, horticulture, or other operationally intensive industries is strongly preferred.
Experience working with sophisticated lenders, private equity sponsors, family offices, or institutional investors is also an asset.

Location

The CFO will maintain a meaningful on-site presence and build strong relationships across both operating locations. Regular travel between St. Thomas and Glencoe is expected as part of developing a deep understanding of the business and supporting operational excellence.

Why This Role

This is an opportunity to join an organization at a defining moment in its journey. Significant investments have been made, the platform for growth is in place, and the leadership team is focused on realizing the full potential of the business. For a finance executive who wants to influence strategy, strengthen operations, develop teams, and help create long-term enterprise value, this role offers both challenge and impact.

If you are energized by building, improving, and leading from the front, we welcome the opportunity to connect.
