Location: Edmonton, Canada
Type of Role: Contract
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Our team is currently looking for a LOTO Coordinator for one of our clients in the Upstream Industry.
The LOTO Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and administering the site Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and hazardous-energy isolation program, ensuring equipment and systems are safely isolated before construction, commissioning, maintenance, inspection, testing or other activities where unexpected energization or release of stored energy could expose personnel to
hazards. The role works closely with Construction, Commissioning, Operations, HSE, Electrical, Mechanical and contractor teams, with particular focus on managing isolation requirements as systems transition from construction through energization, commissioning and turnover.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Coordinate implementation of the site/project LOTO program and approved energy-isolation procedures.
- Review isolation requirements before work begins, ensuring all hazardous energy sources and isolation points are correctly identified.
- Coordinate electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, chemical and other applicable energy isolations.
- Maintain the LOTO register and associated isolation documentation.
- Control the issuance, modification, suspension and removal of LOTO/isolation documentation in accordance with approved procedures.
- Ensure stored and residual energy is appropriately controlled before equipment is released for work.
- Maintain the integrity of established isolation boundaries throughout the work.
Field Coordination
- Coordinate with authorized personnel performing isolations and crews working under those isolations.
- Verify field isolation points against approved drawings, isolation plans and system documentation.
- Conduct field checks and audits of locks, tags and isolation points.
- Coordinate complex and multi-discipline isolations involving multiple systems, contractors or work groups.
- Support shift handovers to ensure active isolations, equipment status and outstanding work are clearly communicated.
Construction, Commissioning & Turnover
- Coordinate LOTO as systems progress from construction completion through pre-commissioning, commissioning and operation.
- Interface with system owners to establish clear control of equipment prior to initial energization.
- Support system turnover and boundary management, ensuring ownership and isolation authority are clearly defined.
- Coordinate temporary energization and testing activities where approved changes to existing isolation boundaries are required.
- Participate in planning energization and commissioning activities that could affect ongoing construction work.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years of industrial construction, maintenance, operations or commissioning experience, including substantial hands-on experience with LOTO and hazardous energy isolation.
- Experience on major industrial projects such as oil and gas, hydrogen, petrochemical, power, mining or other heavy industrial facilities.
- Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical isolation principles and hazardous energy control.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, single-line diagrams, equipment drawings, line lists and system boundaries.
- Working knowledge of permit-to-work, commissioning, energization and system-turnover processes.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple contractors, disciplines and simultaneous work activities in an active field environment.
- Strong field presence, attention to detail and clear communication skills.
- Electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, operations or safety background considered an asset.
