Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Manager of Translation Services, you will translate and revise texts translated internally or externally (from English into French) in all businesses of the organization, specifically in corporate communications, insurance and technology, by using translation tools (memoQ, Globalese) judiciously to ensure the quality and consistency in translated documents and to hit the productivity goals for your level. This is a fast-paced, day-to-day support role within a translation team of approximately 25–30 people divided into 5 teams, supporting high-visibility content for TD Insurance, Corporate Communications, Technology, the Office of the CEO and senior leadership, corporate events and communications, and some legal and finance content. The work is primarily corporate/public-facing communication rather than highly technical or traditional retail-banking terminology. A typical day involves a balance of approximately 60% revision and 40% translation tasks, reviewing translations produced internally and by external vendors, with approximately 2 hours per week spent in meetings. The contractor will have access to customer data.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end long-term translation projects, by working with the coordinator, internal partners and external suppliers
- Serve as the language expert for your colleagues, internal partners and suppliers
- Coach, train and guide less experienced team members in translation and customer service issues and challenges
- Fill in for the Associate Manager, as required
- Demonstrate strong file analysis skills and decisiveness
- Ensure the tone and style of translated documents follow the brand guidelines
- Conduct terminological research to produce high-quality translations, and add to the terminological database by creating records
- Work with internal partners and other members of the Translation Services to produce quality turnkey translations
- Meet or exceed service level agreements
- Be able to work under pressure, and manage emergencies and priorities
Required Skills
- Experience in translation is a must – minimum 8 years
- Bilingual in French and English (English-to-French translation)
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to answer questions for other team members – be the go-to person
- Conduct terminological research
- Knowledge of FlowFit and memoQ (minimum 1 year)
- Attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Full proficiency of French and English language nuances in the team's field of specialty – corporate communications, insurance and technology
- Accuracy and attention to detail – take personal accountability for the quality of the work; make sure the work is done right and is of high quality
- Efficiency – find ways to make the most of the available time and resources; improve your efficiency and productivity by organizing your schedule
- Team player – work effectively with other team members to hit common goals; help maintain a good work atmosphere
- Development – keep up to date in your field by reading feature articles and trade publications; identify your personal development needs and take steps to meet them
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, independently and in a team; interest in special assignments
Preferred Skills
- Membership in OTTIAQ is an asset
- Skills in coaching to give feedback to junior translators
- Experience in the banking sector or a structured work environment; experience in insurance
- Experience working on senior leadership communications or corporate communications
- Knowledge of Copilot is a definite asset
- Experience in post-editing of machine translation
- FlōFit experience is preferred but not mandatory and can be learned on the job
- Candidates with experience from corporate translation, government translation, financial services, insurance, technology, or large organizations with structured translation environments are welcome
Education Requirements
- B.A. with specialization in English-to-French translation, or equivalent training
Required Experience
- Approximately 8–10 years of experience in translation and 5 years of experience in revision in a structured work environment, specializing in banking
Nice-to-Have Experience
- Banking sector experience is not mandatory; candidates from government, corporate communications, insurance, technology, or other sectors can be considered
- Candidates with 20+ years of experience are welcome
- Experience with memoQ and/or similar translation tools is acceptable; a candidate who has memoQ but not FlōFit, or vice versa, can still be considered
Important Notes
- Candidates who live too far from the Montreal hub will not be considered - proximity to the hub is required
- The interview process consists of: (1) a 1-round virtual interview of approximately 20 minutes; (2) a 3-hour timed assessment test (details shared during the 20-minute call) - the test includes English-to-French translation tasks (e.g., CEO/high-visibility corporate communication, TD Insurance public-facing/general content) and French revision/editing (candidates receive an English source and an intentionally poor French translation and must revise it); (3) if the test result is satisfactory, an in-person interview of approximately 1 hour follows
- The contractor will have access to customer data
