Job Details

Type: Full-time employee, non-permanent, time-duration.
Start Date: Candidates available for immediate start are preferred.
Duration: to March 31, 2027 with potential for extension.
Compensation: $25.52 per hour. Employees receive a monthly cellphone allowance and can influence a flexible schedule.

Job Description

Restoration Field Technician

Complexity and Scope of the position

Under the direct supervision and management of the Operations Manager, and the mentorship from the Director of Operations, the Restoration Field Technician will work with the FVWC field team to accomplish the goals and activities of the FVWC Watershed Programs.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks and Responsibilities Include:

Operations (>95 %)

FIELD SUPPORT – Tasks May Include

Harvesting and planting live stakes and whips willow for FVWC plantings.
Assistance with site preparation work including mechanical invasive plant control, seeding, and mulching.
Assistance with plant layout for volunteer plantings.
Planting trees and shrubs and installing beaver guards on sites during/after volunteer plantings.
Ongoing maintenance work including mechanical removal of invasive plants, herbivory guard repair, planting, irrigation of plants, integrated pest-management techniques, notching beaver dams.
Water quality, fish and amphibian monitoring.
Plant survivorship assessments.
Mapping of watercourses, wetlands and riparian areas.
Ensuring proper use, care and storage of FVWC field equipment.
Taking photos before and after documenting each site.
Other tasks as assigned.
Maintaining FVWC’s Ethical and Professional code of conduct.
Maintaining FVWC’s Health and Safety requirements.

Community (

COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT – Tasks May Include

Participate in community events to promote FVWC projects, environments sustainability and healthy watersheds & inform people about actions to become better stewards.
Engage public as FVWC representatives at public located sites as/if questions arise.
Attend meeting and events on behalf of the FVWC.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Outside – Field Work. Hands-on, involves physical exertion -the ability to lift 50lbs, squatting, bending, extended time walking and standing. May be exposed to a wide range of weather conditions including heat, cold, wind and/or rain. This position requires you to operate equipment such as gas-powered hand tools. This position requires that you wear protective attire such as work gloves, hats, safety vests, ear and eye protection and footwear to protect yourself. *Training and protective equipment is provided by the employer.*

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:

Previous field work experience
Previous landscaping experience
Previous experience with gas powered tools.
Knowledge and identification of native flora and fauna.
An understanding of local watershed challenges in the eastern Fraser Valley.

Skills & Abilities

Ability to work well within a team environment.
Physical stamina: lifting, digging, and working in all weather
Minor carpentry skills.
Ability to organize daily workload by priorities.
Must be able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced quickly changing environment.
Ability to work well under seasonal peak periods and in changing environmental situations.

EDUCATION

Grade 12
Post-secondary education in biology, geography or ecological restoration would be an asset.

Eligibility & Requirements

Applicants must:

Have successful completion of a Police Information Check.
Have successful completion of a Functional Abilities Assessment.
Have a valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence, and/or valid BC CLASS 7 driver’s license (“N”).
Must have access and use of a reliable vehicle to get to and from worksites located in Hope, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission, Maple Ridge, and Langley.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
Applicants local to the Fraser Valley, BC are preferred.
Interest in local conservation issues.
Maintain confidentiality as per organizational and legislative requirements.
Maintain, promote, and enhance the company’s Health and Safety practices, audits, and procedures (i.e. WHMIS, Health and Safety Policies).

SUPPORTING EMPLOYEES

Restoration Field Technicians will be supported throughout their employment with FVWC from onboarding to continual supervision and mentorship and offboarding.
