You will bring together technical evidence, policy and regulatory requirements to support coordinated, well-informed decisions on projects within the NWT and those with transboundary impacts.

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager of Project Assessment, you will provide expert analysis throughout environmental assessment processes, coordinate input from departments and other governments, and help develop GNWT positions, submissions and recommendations. The role works within a complex framework of land and resource legislation, land claims, Indigenous consultation requirements and evolving environmental assessment policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of environmental assessments, including project impacts, cumulative effects and proposed mitigation measures.
  • Coordinate and synthesize technical information from GNWT departments and subject-matter experts into consolidated positions and submissions.
  • Support GNWT and federal government information sharing and consensus-building on complex regulatory and assessment issues.
  • Prepare briefing notes, decision papers, submissions and recommendations to support senior officials and Ministerial decision-making.
  • Contribute to environmental assessment policies, standards, guidelines and procedures and identify opportunities to improve assessment practices.
  • Support Crown consultation responsibilities and work with Indigenous governments, regulatory boards, federal agencies and other partners throughout assessment processes.

Qualifications

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • A Master’s degree in a discipline or sub-discipline of biophysical or natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, geography, environmental science, natural resource management, law, or a related field, combined with three years of experience in environmental assessment or environmental management, legislative and policy analysis and development, and project management.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
