Original job description

Canada - AB - Calgary

Senior Design Engineer

Full-Time

Remote or Hybrid depending on location - Alberta, New-Brunswick or Quebec

The Senior Design Engineer leads the development of complex preliminary engineering designs and provides technical leadership throughout early-stage project development. Leading a draftsperson and a mechanical designer, this role ensures designs meet operational needs, Graymont standards, and project objectives while delivering practical, cost-effective solutions.

Responsibilities

Lead, coach, and develop a team by setting clear expectations, fostering collaboration and accountability, and ensuring high-quality, timely deliverables.
Interpret and validate preliminary design criteria based on project objectives, production targets, and product requirements.
Lead early-stage engineering and multidisciplinary concept development in collaboration with EPC project management, process engineering, and operations teams.
Develop key technical deliverables, including process flow diagrams, conceptual layouts, and equipment lists, in collaboration with the design team.
Ensure designs align with operational requirements, project objectives, Graymont standards, applicable codes, and lessons learned.
Prepare Class 5 cost estimates for proposed design concepts.
Develop and continuously improve internal engineering standards and methodologies.
Lead design reviews and option analyses, coordinate with EPC partners and consultants, and identify opportunities for value engineering and design optimization.
Perform preliminary sizing calculations for material-handling systems and process equipment.
Review vendor drawings and technical submittals for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with the approved design intent.

Qualifications

Education & Professional Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline; at least seven years of progressively responsible design engineering experience; and a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence or equivalent.

Technology Requirements: Advanced proficiency in CAD software and related engineering tools.

Skills & Competencies

Extensive experience in material handling, equipment sizing, and processing plant design, preferably in the cement or lime industry.
Strong knowledge of engineering codes and standards, supported by sound technical judgment and problem-solving skills.
Proven leadership, team-building, coaching, and people-development skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and time-management skills.
Ability to manage a demanding workload, balance competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
Experience leading major multidisciplinary engineering design packages.

Travel Requirements: Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 25% of the time.
