Your Role as a Quality Technician
We are looking for a Quality Technician to support aggregate production and quality control across our Newfoundland and Labrador operations. Our team produces the crushed stone, sand and gravel that goes into roads, bridges, marine works and concrete throughout the province and into export markets.
The Quality Technician is a critical part of the Quality and Production team. You will take samples in the field, run the tests in our laboratory, and report the results that confirm our products meet project and certification specifications.
This is a great way to break into the construction materials industry. The right candidate will have a direct impact on how we produce and certify our aggregates. Candidates should have strong attention to detail, good communication and organization skills, and be ready to learn in a fast-paced environment. There is significant room for growth, including paid training toward industry certifications.
This is a rotational trades role based at our Belleoram, NL site, working 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off on 12-hour shifts.
Key Responsibilities
- Check in with the plant or pit operator to go over the production plan and sampling requirements for the day.
- Head out to the crusher, stockpiles or a jobsite to collect representative aggregate samples.
- Return to the laboratory and run tests on the material: gradation and sieve analysis, moisture content, washed sieve, specific gravity and absorption, LA abrasion, Micro-Deval, petrographic sample prep and other physical property tests.
- Compare results against the applicable specification and flag any material trending out of tolerance to the Quality Manager.
- Enter results into the lab data system and quality records, and help maintain control charts for each product.
- Calibrate and maintain lab equipment, and keep the lab organized, safe and audit-ready.
- Support quality audits, certification testing and proficiency samples for programs such as CMEC and state or provincial agency approvals.
- Review results and production trends with management, receive feedback and offer suggestions for improvement.
What You’ll Bring
- Post-secondary education in civil engineering technology, construction, geology or a related field is an asset; we will also consider strong candidates with relevant field experience.
- Experience in aggregate, asphalt or concrete testing is an asset. Existing CSA, CMEC, ACI or CCIL certifications are a strong asset, and training will be provided.
- Comfortable working outdoors around active quarry and crushing operations and committed to working safely.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a good driving record.
- Willingness to travel within the province for several days at a time, and occasionally longer, as required.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook; comfort with data entry into lab and quality systems.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to lift sample containers and materials up to approximately 25 kg.
- Willingness to work a remote, rotational schedule (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off, 12-hour shifts) in Belleoram, NL.
- Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform manual tasks as required.
