Original job description

About Us:

Ground News is a news comparison platform that makes it easy to compare sources, read between the lines of media bias, and break free from algorithms. We provide our subscribers the tools to navigate the information ecosystem with clarity and independence, rather than retreat into echo chambers or outsource their judgment.

In a world where political polarization and media distrust are at an all-time high, Ground News offers people a better way to stay informed and see every side of the story. Our mobile app, web app, and browser extension are home to a community of mindful readers who use our news comparison platform to engage critically with the news and beyond their filter bubble.

Unlike most news companies, our values do not align with any specific political ideology. Unlike most tech platforms, we don’t rely on algorithms to keep users on our platform to sell ads. We are supported by our readers who pay for a subscription to build a more nuanced understanding of the news, the world, and themselves.

Highlights:

#1 on Product Hunt
#2 on 2025 Apple Design Awards in the Social Impact category
3-time winner of US App of the Day
Winner of Mobile Apps Showdown at CES

The Opportunity:

As a Staff Engineer, you'll own the technical direction of the web properties that convert curious visitors into paying subscribers. You'll sit in the Frontend chapter, working day-to-day in the Growth & Monetization pod alongside Revenue Growth, Marketing, Sponsorships, and CRO.

This is not a design role. You won't be doing visual/UX design work; our design partners own that. You’ll own the engineering layers: architecture, experimentation infrastructure, performance, and making non-engineers self-sufficient to ship experiments safely.

Within 90–180 days, success means a marketing or growth teammate can ship a landing-page change, a modal, or a pricing experiment without an engineer in the loop.

Before you apply:

This is a staff-level role centered on growth engineering; a great fit if you've spent 8+ years building production frontend experience, including 3+ years operating at a senior or staff level, and you've owned user or revenue growth on a web property. It's not the right fit if your background is mainly visual/UX design, or if you're earlier in your career and working toward that senior step, but we'd love to have you watch for future roles that match where you are.

What You’ll Do:

Technical strategy for Ground News' web properties, with a direct mandate on user growth and subscription revenue.
The marketing-tech stack (currently Unbounce, likely migrating to Framer): you'll lead that migration and set the guardrails.
The web experimentation program end-to-end.
Web performance, accessibility, SEO, and Core Web Vitals for a consumer property serving millions of readers.
Senior voice in code review and architecture across the frontend chapter.
Safe rollout practices on Flightcontrol for revenue-critical surfaces.

What You’ll Bring:

8+ years building production web applications, with 3+ years at a senior or staff IC level.
Deep, hands-on expertise in Next.js, React, and TypeScript. You’ve built and shipped at scale.
A specific, quantifiable track record of growing user base or revenue from a web property.
Hands-on experience running A/B or multivariate experiments end-to-end: hypothesis framing, sample sizing, clean measurement, honest read of results.
Direct experience working inside or alongside a CRO function, fluent in marketing-tech tooling (Unbounce, Framer, Webflow, or similar).
Experience with PostHog, Amplitude, or Segment, and building trustworthy funnel instrumentation from scratch.
Experience shipping to production on revenue-critical surfaces with feature flagging, monitoring, and rollback discipline.
Willingness to travel occasionally to our Kitchener, Ontario HQ and for company-wide All Hands meetups.

Bonus Points:

Experience technically coaching engineers.
Experience with a subscription or consumer-media product.

Why Work at Ground?

Co-founded by a former NASA engineer and Bain consultant, a position with Ground News provides an unparalleled learning experience both personally and professionally. At Ground, we prioritize growth: both for our business and team members. You’ll have the freedom to work remotely and play a key role in the development of Ground News products.

This is an opportunity to work with a growing and mighty team that is committed to building a world where cooperative, civil debate is the norm, media is accountable, and critical thought is the baseline of our information consumption. Ground is based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, but this role is remote.

What You’ll Enjoy at Ground News:

💰 Competitive total rewards: A market-benchmarked base salary, calibrated to your location.

🌍 Remote-first environment: Work from anywhere in Canada, on your own time zone plus enjoy in-person meetups and team gatherings.

🩺 Health & Wellness that matter: Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage for you and your family.

📈 Keep growing: Access to professional development opportunities to keep expanding your skills and career.

🚀 Mission-driven team: Join a group of smart, dedicated people who are building meaningful products with real-world impact.

Our culture is one of collaboration, creativity, and diverse perspectives. If you have any questions, concerns, or requests regarding accessibility needs, please contact talent@ground.news, and a member of our team will be happy to help.
