Original job description
Do you like managing the details while doing good things for the environment? Are you confident taking ownership of compliance and comfortable being the person others rely on to get it right? Are you more organized and capable than most? If so, GRT may be the place for you.
GRT’s Resource Regeneration Facility receives trucks and barges of unwanted soil from our customers, then washes and sorts the soil to produce clean rock products for reuse by other customers. As the Environmental Quality and Compliance Manager, you’re the custodian of the facility’s environmental permit compliance and regulatory reports to the Ministry of Environment, the Nanaimo Port Authority, and the Regional District of Nanaimo. You’ll track the quality, quantity, location, movement, treatment, and destination of all that soil and rock; manage environmental sampling, QA/QC, and lab analysis; grade output material; and supply accurate data for internal and external requirements. You’ll spend most of your day working at a computer in our Site Office trailer, but will also walk the site at least twice daily to check material types and locations, collect samples, and connect with site staff. You’ll communicate regularly with Plant Operations, Business Development, and Finance, and serve as the point person for environmental quality, compliance, and material management.
Every day is a little bit different at our plant, so this role needs someone comfortable responding to changes such as material movements, client demands, new lab data, or regulatory requirements. It calls for impeccable record-keeping and personal accountability for those records, the ability to communicate confidently and work successfully across departments, and the professional judgment to act as one of GRT’s Qualified Environmental Professionals.
Schedule is 5 x 8-hour shifts per week, Monday through Friday.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage all environmental permit compliance and reporting. Prepare monthly reports for the Ministry of Environment, quarterly reports for the Nanaimo Port Authority, and quarterly reports for the Regional District of Nanaimo.
- Understand, track and record the environmental quality, quantity, location, and movement dates of plant incoming (feedstock) and outgoing (processed) materials. Share that information with multiple departments to assist with business development, operational, sales, soil relocation, and storage decisions. You will be the point person for all matters relating to environmental quality, compliance, and material management.
- Manage environmental sample collection, shipment, QA/QC requirements, lab communication and sample supplies for water, soil, slurry, and QA/QC testing. Request lab analysis and transfer analytical data from lab reports to spreadsheets. Regularly audit sample collection to confirm compliance with permits. You will have some assistance with sampling but are also expected to do some sample collection yourself.
- Complete and submit online notifications for receiving sites. Identify recycling and disposal options for non-conforming materials.
- Grade output material quality according to a prescribed procedure.
- Complete weekly material quantity audits, cross-reference with scale tickets, plant data, and schedule, identify discrepancies, and adjust to corroborate. Supply data to finance.
- Record material (chemicals, fuel, etc.) deliveries to the site, track usage, notify Plant Operations when supplies are low, check against invoices.
- Assist with innovation, research and development proposals, projects, data tracking, and reporting (e.g., SRED, IRAP).
- If time allows, take on additional tasks related to data management, streamlining or optimizing data collection and management processes, innovation, research & development, and environmental permitting. We are a young company and always looking for ways to improve systems and processes.
- Adhere to applicable safety and environmental standards, regulations, and company policies. Attend daily safety tailgate meeting, complete, and upload various safety forms daily to a web-based program.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop the experience and competencies required to act as a QEP in support of GRT's environmental compliance and permitting activities.
- First Aid and WHMIS certifications an asset.
