Canada’s October 2026 jobs report and the squeeze on young workers

By MovoJobs. Canada, October 2026 Labour Force Survey, released November 6.

Canada ended October with roughly as many people working as in September. Yet more people were looking for work, and unemployment reached 6.7%. For workers aged 15 to 24 the rate reached 13.7%, up from 13.0% in September.

What changed for young applicants?

Youth employment edged down while more young people searched for work. Both movements count. The unemployment rate measures the share of the labour force who are unemployed. Students outside the labour force are excluded from that calculation. A rate of 13.7% therefore tells a different story from saying that 13.7% of all young Canadians need a job.

What happened to people who were already looking?

Picture following a group of people who were unemployed in September and checking a month later. Statistics Canada found that 18.9% had a job in October. That is a more direct answer to a job seeker’s question about finding work than the total number of people employed on one survey date.

  • 202519.8%
  • 202618.9%

In a group of 100, the difference between the pre-pandemic average and this October amounts to about six fewer people finding work within a month. It cannot predict how quickly one applicant will hear back. A second measure shows the longer wait: 23.7% of unemployed people had been looking continuously for at least 27 weeks.

One national total hides movement between industries

Wholesale and retail employment fell by 29,000 in October. Construction gained 16,000 and educational services gained 15,000. These are net changes in the number of people working. A retailer can still recruit for a particular store or shift while employment across the industry falls. That distinction matters if you are deciding whether a local opening is worth applying for.

Why the province matters when reading the headline

Alberta employment fell by 24,000 in October while British Columbia gained 12,000. Construction and education grew nationally, but those averages cannot tell a Calgary applicant which employer has a shift that starts after class, or a Vancouver nurse which hospital recognizes previous service. Narrow the question to the city, occupation and schedule you can work.

For an applicant in retail, a decline of 29,000 across wholesale and retail does not imply that every store stopped hiring. Net employment measures the balance of people leaving and entering work. An opening at one store can coexist with fewer staff overall. A useful way to read the national report is to use it for context, then check the actual requisition for the hours, employer, location and application deadline.

Common questions

What was Canada’s unemployment rate in October 2026?

It was 6.7%, up 0.2 percentage points from September. The employment rate was 60.5%.

Why can unemployment rise in a month when employment barely changes?

More people can enter the labour force and start searching. The count of people seeking work can rise even if the number employed changes very little.

Does 13.7% mean one in seven young Canadians lost a job?

No. It is the share of 15- to 24-year-olds in the labour force who were unemployed at the time. It includes people looking for a first job.

Does a Movo listing count measure the unemployment rate?

No. Movo counts ads in its catalogue. Statistics Canada estimates how many people are employed, unemployed and outside the labour force using a household survey.

How many people were employed in Canada?

Statistics Canada estimated 21.1 million in October. The monthly change of about 4,700 fewer people was small enough for the agency to describe employment as little changed.

When will November figures be available?

Statistics Canada scheduled the next Labour Force Survey release for December 4, covering the reference week of November 8 to 14.
