Original job description

Summary

Guidewire’s development team is looking for a smart, proactive, and results-oriented Software Engineer II to build elegant solutions for the property & casualty insurance industry’s complex business domain and make our industry-leading products even better. The team is looking for an enthusiastic engineer who is passionate about building high-quality software with a great team and improving the customer experience for millions of people who use our products every day.

The team you will be joining sits within Guidewire’s Product Development and Operations (PDO) organization, which builds and runs the cloud platform that powers the world’s most trusted P&C insurance software. The team focuses on SBT Content and insurance content transformation for U.S. Commercial insurers, which requires large-scale data volumes, heavy server load, and complex business logic. You will work in a highly collaborative and agile environment with a team of Software Engineers, and you will contribute to the design and implementation of high-performance software solutions that align with our product goals and technical best practices.

As part of PDO’s shift toward AI-driven development, you will use AI-native coding approaches and AI-assisted tools (such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot) to build, refactor, and extend our services quickly and safely while maintaining high engineering standards, tests, and observability. Your work will support PDO’s mission to embed GenAI across our products, improve operational excellence, and deliver secure, reliable, and scalable cloud services at scale.

Our teams are lean, empowered, and collaborative. You must be a self-starter and able to perform with minimal supervision while working alongside intelligent colleagues who’ve checked their egos at the door in a team environment, communicating effectively with everyone.

Job Description

Successful software engineers at Guidewire typically have:

A desire to work collaboratively in an empowered, small, cross-functional team
Experience working in an agile and fast-paced development environment (e.g. TDD, BDD, Agile, pair programming, etc.)
A passion for code quality demonstrated by thorough testing
A desire to be hands-on in designing and writing code
A demonstrated ability to embrace AI and apply it to their role, alongside data-driven insights, to drive innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement
Curiosity and internal motivation to constantly improve
Ability to learn quickly in a dynamic environment

Excellent communication skills, comfort level to speak their mind and defend ideas based on merit, yet humility and hunger to learn from others

At Guidewire, we foster a culture of curiosity, innovation, and responsible use of AI - empowering our teams to continuously leverage emerging technologies and data-driven insights to enhance productivity and outcomes.

Key qualifications include experience with:

Demonstrated ability to embrace AI and apply it to your current role as well as data-driven insights to drive innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement.

Minimum 2+ years of Software Development experience, preferably in SaaS or cloud solutions
Proficiency in Core Java, and good working knowledge of the Spring framework

Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python
Experience building microservices on cloud service platforms (e.g. AWS/GCP/Azure) – AWS preferred
Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker and Kubernetes)
Experience designing REST or gRPC based APIs
Ability to use AI-assisted coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development while exercising strong judgment around code quality, testing, and security
Good understanding of Object-Oriented Design principles
Understanding of relational database persistence (e.g. MySQL, Oracle); familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB, CouchDB) is a plus
Great understanding of CI/CD and DevOps principles; experience with related tools such as TeamCity, Git-based workflows, or Kubernetes is a definite plus
Experience with LLMs, LangChain, and/or AI patterns such as RAG or ReAct is a plus
Exposure to AI/ML development patterns such as prompt engineering or integrating AI services into production systems is a plus
BS/MS degree (Computer Science or related field)

What’s in it for you

The people we employ give their all, and in return, we offer flexibility wherever we can, such as:

Flexible work environment
Health and Wellness benefits
Paid time off programs including volunteer time off
Market-competitive pay and incentive programs
Continual development and internal career growth opportunities

All new hires participate in our in-person orientation, where you’ll connect with colleagues, learn about our culture and mission, and see how your work in PDO and SBT Content fits into Guidewire’s broader journey to combine digital, core, analytics, and AI as a cloud service for P&C insurers worldwide.

The Canadian CAD base salary range for this full-time position is 87,000.00 - 109,000.00. Your base pay will depend on your experience, skills, education, training, and location among other factors. All full-time positions or part-time roles working 30 hours or more a week at Guidewire are eligible for benefits that support their health and well-being including health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, and a company sponsored retirement plan.
