Original job description
Reporting to the Software Development Manager, the Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is a hands-on engineering role responsible for building quality into the software delivery lifecycle. The SDET designs and develops maintainable test automation, improves application testability, and integrates reliable automated quality checks into CI/CD pipelines.
Working with the QA Lead, developers, architects, security, and Platform Engineering, the SDET advances continuous testing practices and helps reduce reliance on manual and release stage testing. The role provides technical leadership through automation architecture, code reviews, reusable engineering patterns, mentoring, and hands-on problem solving. Quality is a shared engineering responsibility. The Senior SDET provides the technical depth and influence needed to help teams deliver high quality software quickly and reliably.
This is a hybrid role in Calgary.
Key Areas of Responsibility

- Apply strong software engineering practices to automation code, including maintainable architecture, code review, diagnostics, and source control.
- Integrate automated testing into Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines to provide fast, reliable feedback throughout delivery.
- Partner with developers and architects to improve testability and design effective testing at the appropriate layer.
- Diagnose complex failures and improve the reliability of test automation, including flaky, slow, or environmentally dependent tests.
- Build and maintain the test data, test doubles, tooling, and infrastructure required for reliable automated testing.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to developers and QA professionals through pairing, code reviews, and hands-on automation support.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of software development, test automation, or quality engineering experience.
- Strong programming skills in C#, Java, TypeScript, or Python.
- Experience building automated tests for APIs, integrations, and web applications using modern frameworks such as Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, or Pact.
- Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, preferably Azure DevOps.
- Strong knowledge of software engineering, testing, debugging, and distributed systems.
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with test automation frameworks such as Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, Pact, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, microservices, messaging, databases, and distributed systems.
- Experience with Azure DevOps CI/CD, Git-based development, and automated pipeline testing.
- Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and Microsoft Azure environments.
- Knowledge of performance, reliability, resilience, and integration testing.
- Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills across applications, services, and test environments.
