With over 1000 MW of renewable power experience and over 100 MWh of energy storage projects currently under management Hatch is leading the energy transition in Canada. The global energy transition is upon us. Join our team of engineers and technical specialists to support utilities, governments and industry in the transition to a low carbon world. While the market is challenging, these challenges present the biggest opportunities and catalysts for change.

Senior Project Engineer – Hybrid Power & Electrification

Hatch is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to join our Power Business Unit and lead the technical delivery of hybrid power and electrification projects across Canada and internationally.

You will work with utilities, communities, and industrial clients to integrate generation, energy storage, controls, and electrical infrastructure into reliable, practical power systems. Projects may include remote and industrial microgrids, battery energy storage, renewable generation integration, port and airport electrification, and distribution infrastructure upgrades.

This role combines technical leadership, multidisciplinary coordination, and client engagement. You will act as a engineering delivery lead, guiding projects from definition and design through procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational handover. We are looking for an experienced electrical engineer who can independently lead complex technical assignments, exercise sound engineering judgment, and resolve issues across equipment and discipline interfaces.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading engineering delivery and owner’s engineer assignments. Define technical scopes, design criteria, deliverables, and engineering execution plans. Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage technical delivery against project scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Represent and take ownership of the client’s technical interests. Review and challenge designs, equipment selections, and contractor submissions for compliance with project requirements, utility standards, reliability, constructability, and operational needs.
  • Lead electrical and control system integration. Coordinate interfaces between generation, DERs, distribution systems, protection, controls, communications, and existing facilities. Work with controls specialists and equipment suppliers to establish how systems will operate under normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions.
  • Leading, coordinating, and performing techno-economic analysis and studies related to the integration of renewable energy technologies and energy storage. Assess hybrid power configurations and electrification options, considering load requirements, reliability, lifecycle cost, emissions, operating constraints, and future expansion.
  • Support clients and business development. Communicate technical recommendations and project risks clearly, build lasting client relationships, and contribute to proposals, estimates, and project delivery strategies.
  • Periodic travel to project sites, including remote locations, will be required.

Education & Experience:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline with substantial electrical power systems experience.
  • Professional Engineer registration in Canada.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in electrical power systems, utility infrastructure, generation, industrial electrification, or multidisciplinary engineering delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex engineering assignments and coordinating multidisciplinary teams, equipment suppliers, and contractors.
  • Strong working knowledge of distribution-level utility standards, connection requirements, and engineering practices, including their application to equipment specifications.
  • Practical experience with power system controls and integration, including operating philosophies, control sequences, protection and control interfaces, and coordination between equipment-level and supervisory controls.
  • Hands-on involvement in electrical commissioning, including test planning or review, factory or site acceptance testing, troubleshooting, and verification of system operation.
  • Experience reviewing electrical designs and supplier documentation, identifying technical risks, and resolving issues through construction and commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and dynamic transient studies.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and client engagement skills, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs and make clear recommendations.

Additional experience that is considered an asset includes:

  • Lead owner’s engineer, utility project engineering, engineering delivery lead, or comparable technical leadership experience.
  • Hybrid power systems, microgrids, battery storage, renewable generation, or conventional generation.
  • Grid-connected and islanded operation, generator paralleling, synchronization, load sharing, and energy management systems.
  • Integration of inverter-based resources and coordination of controls across multiple equipment suppliers.
  • Medium-voltage distribution systems and upgrades to operating facilities.
Work with Indigenous communities or projects in remote and northern locations.
  • Techno-economic assessment, energy modelling, or lifecycle cost analysis.
  • Familiarity with relevant engineering tools such as CYME, ETAP, PSCAD, PSS/E, HOMER, MATLAB, or Python. Expertise in every listed tool is not expected.

 What does Hatch offer?

  • Challenging and engaging career with countless opportunities with the latest technologies and projects in the power industry.
  • Mentorship and guidance from industry experts.
  • An exciting work environment in the fast-paced engineering consulting business.
  • Opportunities for national and international travel for projects, site work, client engagement and conferences.
  • Opportunities to work with many different cultures in multiple languages.

The rest is up to you – we will provide you with as much challenge as you are willing to take on.
