Original job description

Intermediate Structural Engineer

A fast-growing multidisciplinary engineering consultancy

Location: Toronto, ON or Ottawa, ON with site visits to Edmonton | Salary: $120k–$135k+ | Full Time

About the Company

This organization is a multidisciplinary engineering firm providing civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering, energy modelling, and fire-protection design services.

The firm delivers projects across Canada and has developed a diverse portfolio spanning residential, commercial and industrial construction. Its structural work ranges from townhomes and low-rise buildings through to mid-rise condominiums and high-rise developments.

Due to continued project demand, the organization is seeking a genuine intermediate-level Structural Engineer who can independently review and stamp structural engineering work while supporting projects through design, construction and completion.

Your New Role

This position will suit an experienced Structural Engineer who combines strong technical design capabilities with meaningful experience reviewing and stamping structural work.

This is not an EIT or purely structural-design position. The successful candidate must be a licensed Professional Engineer with sufficient stamping experience to help relieve the current workload carried by the Director of Structural Engineering.

The role will involve managing approximately 5–10 active projects at different stages. These may include new design assignments, drawing reviews, engineering calculations, construction administration, site inspections and the review and stamping of completed work.

The successful candidate will gain exposure to a blend of:

  • Structural Design & Engineering
  • Multi-family residential developments
  • Townhouses and low-rise residential buildings
  • Mid-rise condominiums, typically ranging from approximately three to eight storeys
  • High-rise residential projects
  • Wood-frame structures
  • Steel structures
  • Commercial buildings
  • Industrial facilities
  • Structural calculations and analysis
  • Structural drawings and technical documentation
  • Review and stamping of structural designs
  • Construction-stage engineering support
  • Project & Construction Management
  • Structural project planning and execution
  • Design development and engineering review
  • Coordination with drafting and design teams
  • Construction administration
  • Structural site inspections
  • Client meetings and project presentations
  • Multidisciplinary project coordination
  • Quality control and technical review
  • Project budgeting and profitability
  • Client relationship management
  • Technical guidance and mentorship
  • Business-development support

Location & Working Arrangements

Strong candidates based in Toronto will be considered. Toronto-based employees would work from the downtown office. Regular office attendance remains preferred, with some flexibility depending on the employee’s location and commute.

The company may also consider an exceptional candidate based in Ottawa, where it has access to coworking space and an active local project portfolio.

Travel is project-dependent rather than tied to a fixed schedule. It will involve site visits mainly to Alberta with some visits to British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or other Canadian locations.

Reporting Structure

The Intermediate Structural Engineer will initially report to the Director of Structural Engineering, who is based in the Toronto office.

You will also work closely with the Manager of Western Canada. The successful candidate will collaborate with the firm’s engineers, structural designers and drafting team across multiple offices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the planning, design, review and execution of structural engineering projects.
  • Independently review and stamp structural drawings, calculations and engineering documentation.
  • Manage approximately 5–10 active projects at various stages of design, review and construction.
  • Complete structural calculations and analysis for wood, steel and other building systems.
  • Provide engineering input and technical direction to the internal drafting and design team.
  • Review technical design phases to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards and project requirements.
  • Coordinate with architects, clients, contractors, consultants and other internal engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in job-site visits, inspections, client meetings and project presentations.
  • Support construction administration and resolve structural issues arising during construction.
  • Maintain regular communication with assigned clients and promote a consistently high standard of service.
  • Take accountability for project quality, deadlines, deliverables and profitability.
  • Resolve technical disputes or conflicts relating to the structural component of assigned projects.
  • Provide technical direction, mentorship and on-the-job training to junior engineers, designers and drafting staff.
  • Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and support new business development.
  • Stay current with technological and regulatory developments within structural engineering.
  • Travel to project sites across Canada when required.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Professional Engineer designation in good standing with APEGA.
  • Approximately 3–5 years of experience working as a Professional Engineer.
  • Demonstrated experience independently reviewing and stamping structural engineering work.
  • Strong knowledge of structural calculations, analysis methods and applicable design standards.
  • Strong wood-frame design experience is an asset.
  • Experience with steel structures and multi-family residential buildings.
  • A mixed project background covering residential, commercial and/or industrial buildings will be an asset.
  • Proficiency with structural design software such as RISA-3D, ETABS and SAFE.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Strong project-management and multidisciplinary coordination skills is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • A client-focused approach with strong interpersonal and relationship-management abilities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for site inspections and project requirements.
  • Registration with additional Canadian engineering associations, including EGBC or PEO, would be considered an asset.

What You’ll Get in Return

  • Expected salary range of $120,000–$135,000, depending on experience.
  • Flexibility to discuss compensation for an exceptional candidate.
  • Medical benefits with premiums shared equally between the employee and employer.
  • Two weeks of contractual vacation plus a paid Christmas shutdown week, providing approximately three weeks of annual paid time away.
  • Company wellness program.
  • Fresh fruit, healthy snacks, vegetables and coffee provided in the offices.
  • Access to wellness initiatives, including an in-house wellness coordinator and massage services that rotate between company offices.
  • Regular team-building and office events throughout the year.
  • Exposure to a varied portfolio of structural projects across Canada.
  • Opportunity to independently manage, review and stamp structural engineering work.
  • Support from an established drafting and design team.
  • Opportunity to mentor junior staff and contribute to the continued development of the structural group.
  • Career growth within a fast-paced, expanding multidisciplinary engineering consultancy.
