Original job description

Your New Company

Hays has partnered with a leading Canadian energy organization to recruit an experienced Senior Land Representative for a 1-year contract based in Calgary. You will join a collaborative land and projects team supporting significant pipeline, facility, infrastructure, and energy projects, with exposure across the full project lifecycle from early development and land acquisition through construction, operations, post-construction activities, and eventual abandonment.

Your New Role

As a fully qualified land professional, you will lead and coordinate land requirements for growth and lifecycle projects. Acting as the land subject matter expert within multidisciplinary project teams, you will identify land requirements and risks, develop acquisition and access strategies, manage landowner engagement and negotiations, coordinate third-party land professionals, and resolve complex property matters. You will balance stakeholder relationships, regulatory requirements, cost, schedule, and precedent-setting considerations to enable successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead landowner engagement, negotiations, land acquisition and access activities for pipeline, facility and infrastructure projects.
  • Identify land requirements, constraints and potential issues, developing practical strategies that address regulatory, schedule, cost and stakeholder considerations.
  • Manage complex land matters, including claims, negotiations, unique ownership or property issues, arbitrations and matters requiring legal support or escalation.
  • Direct and oversee contract land agents, land service providers, appraisers, surveyors, consulting foresters and other property-related consultants while maintaining quality and performance standards.
  • Prepare and manage land cost estimates, forecasts, purchase orders, schedules and deliverables, while maintaining accurate land records and supporting data integrity.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Projects, Environment and Regulatory, Construction, Indigenous Relations and other stakeholders, including supporting applicable public awareness, consent and stakeholder programs.

Must-Have Requirements

  • Minimum 6 years of progressively responsible land management experience within the Canadian energy sector.
  • Strong, hands-on experience leading land scope for pipeline, facility, infrastructure or comparable energy projects, ideally within an owner/operator environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian land acquisition, access, landowner engagement and land practices, with demonstrated experience leading complex negotiations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply federal and provincial land-related legislation and regulatory requirements in a project environment.
  • Strong project leadership and coordination skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, contractors, schedules, costs, risks and dependencies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, stakeholder management, analytical and problem-solving skills, along with a valid driver's licence.

Nice-to-Have Requirements

  • Working knowledge of regulatory environments involving the Canada Energy Regulator (CER), Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), BC Energy Regulator (BCER) and/or Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC).
  • Experience with Pandell or comparable land management databases, including maintaining accurate land and ownership records.
  • Experience with Microsoft Copilot, advanced Microsoft Office tools, public awareness programs or broader Canadian provincial regulatory environments.

What Success Looks Like

  • Land requirements, acquisition and access activities are identified early and executed effectively to support project milestones.
  • Complex landowner, claim and property matters are resolved using sound judgment while appropriately managing commercial, regulatory and precedent-setting risk.
  • Project teams receive accurate land information, realistic plans, clear status reporting and well-coordinated support from external land professionals.

What You'll Get in Return

This is an opportunity to take ownership of meaningful land scope across major Canadian energy projects while working with experienced multidisciplinary teams. You will gain broad exposure across the project lifecycle, manage complex negotiations and land issues, and operate as a trusted land subject matter expert within a sophisticated project environment.
