Senior Medical Director, Gynaecology & Sexual Health, Specialized Programs

BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre

5-year term / 0.6 FTE

The Senior Medical Director (SMD), Gynaecology & Sexual Health, Specialized Programs is accountable to the Chief Medical Officer for the provision of medical, clinical, operational and strategic leadership related to program development and implementation related to integration of Gynaecology and Sexual Health Services within services offered through BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre.

The SMD, Gynaecology & Sexual Health, Specialized Programs works with the CMO to recruit, mentor and oversee Medical Directors/Leads for relevant areas of the Program, keeping current their contract or other remuneration arrangements and supporting their career development including performance development as appropriate. Programs of accountability include Gynecology Surgical Services; CARE Program; Maternal Ambulatory Program; Women’s Health Centre Chronic Complex Diseases Program; Menopause and Midlife Health Program; Oak Tree Program; and Sexual Assault Service.

Specific Accountabilities

Executive Strategic Leadership

Work collaboratively with the Executive team of BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre, to develop strategic priorities and implement and evaluate agreed on priorities of the hospital and the Provincial Health Services Authority.

Provide leadership and participate in activities related to site redevelopment and Clinical Services Transformation (CST) relevant to ambulatory services and related strategic priorities.

Provide medical leadership and oversight for program development and implementation related to integration of Gynecology and Sexual Health Services, including enhancing access to procedures not requiring full operating room services.

Operational Leadership

Work collaboratively across surgical programs with the CMO and Directors, Patient Care Services, the Senior Medical Director Maternal Newborn Program, and Medical Directors.

In collaboration with the Leadership team, ensure a strategic and operational plan is in place for the programs; develop annual operating objectives and the budget for the Program; and manage approved budgets and meet operating objectives.

Work with the CMO and Directors, Patient Care Services, to ensure that there are appropriate processes for the timely sharing of accurate information and for communication to the CMO.

Clinical Oversight

Ensure that clinical service, research and education are properly conducted in collaboration with the CMO, the Vice President Research, and the relevant Department Heads and Medical Program Directors and the University of British Columbia.

Provide specific leadership and treat as a priority the working relationships, quality and medical staff resource issues for ambulatory services, supporting an engaged, collaborative and collegial interdisciplinary environment; work with relevant Department/Division Heads as required, to facilitate optimal recruitment of medical staff for clinical programs.

Work in cooperation with the hospital’s Department Heads to address identified performance issues of a member of the medical staff that impact patient safety and quality of care in Ambulatory Services.

Provide leadership and coordination with respect to the physicians providing Ambulatory Services, in the evaluation of the efficiency, quality and delivery of the Services, including and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, participation in medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews, and critical safety event reviews

Qualifications

This position requires a Medical Doctor degree with current licensure or eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and 10+ years of experience in a senior leadership role.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to beginning and continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.

As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitment to learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions Based Approach.
