Come Work and Play in Kelowna!

Emergency Medicine Opportunity – Kelowna General Hospital

About Kelowna

Sparkling lake views, vineyard-covered hills, world class skiing less than an hour away, and a vibrant downtown full of great food, live music, and local culture. That’s life in Kelowna, the Okanagan Valley’s largest and liveliest city. Whether you love paddling and biking in the summer, or skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, Kelowna offers a four-season lifestyle that’s second to none. Surrounded by natural beauty, but with all the amenities of a major city - including top wineries, restaurants, breweries, and arts - you’ll quickly see why people come for the career and stay for the Kelowna lifestyle.

About Kelowna General Hospital (KGH)

KGH is one of Interior Health’s two tertiary referral hospitals and the beating heart of health care in the region, with over 100,000 ED visits annually. Our state-of-the-art Emergency Department serves a broad catchment area and sees a wide variety of cases - from trauma to complex medical presentations. As BC’s only cardiac critical care center outside of the Lower Mainland and Victoria, KGH offers advanced services like open-heart surgery, ECMO, coronary revascularizations, and endovascular thrombectomies. We are also a Level 2 Trauma Centre and a designated stroke referral center with around-the-clock coverage.

A Fun, Collegial Emergency Department

We aren’t just passionate about medicine - we’re passionate about building a tight-knit, collegial team that supports one another both in and out of the department. Whether it's collaborating on challenging cases, sharing laughs in the break room, wine tasting in the shoulder season, or hitting the slopes or trails together on our days off, our team has built a culture of connection, camaraderie, and fun.

You'll be joining a welcoming, experienced, and dynamic group of emergency physicians who truly enjoy working together. We prioritize mentorship, teamwork, and celebrating each other's wins - whether it’s a smooth trauma resuscitation or a great weekend adventure. The collegiality you’ll experience extends beyond our group and includes our incredible consultants and specialists we work with daily. KGH still maintains the atmosphere of a community hospital with the vast majority of consultant calls being direct with staff physicians. You will get to know your consultants on a first name basis and the relationships we have built at KGH make it a unique and exceptional place to practice Emergency Medicine.

Academic Excellence In a Community You’ll Love

Kelowna is also home to an academically vibrant ED. We are proud to host a FRCPC Emergency Medicine residency program, as well as UBC’s Southern Medical School, a Rural Family Medicine Residency program, and an FRCPC Psychiatry Residency program. If you love teaching, you’ll have countless opportunities to get involved in bedside teaching, simulation, Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Core EM Rounds, Ultrasound, and more. Our team values educators who help foster the next generation of physicians - and have fun doing it!

Position Details

We are currently accepting applications for multiple permanent full-time Emergency Medicine positions (start date: negotiable, ideally July 2027). A full-time position consists of ~14 shifts/month (average ~8 hours/shift), with options to pick up additional shifts if desired. We are always accepting applications for Locum positions from 2 weeks - 12 months. Minimum shift requirement would be 6 shifts in a 2 week Locum or if > 4 weeks, 6 shifts/month.
