The system application pharmacist’s primary responsibilities are in relation to the clinical information system (CIS), integrating pharmacy practice with technology to enhance the quality and safety of patient care. They provide leadership, engagement, training, and support to pharmacy staff regarding matters related to pharmacy-related information systems and clinical applications. This role serves as a bridge between pharmacy practice and technology, ensuring medication management systems, electronic health records (EHRs), computerized physician order entry (CPOE), and other pharmacy applications function safely and effectively.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Receive and manage pharmacy inquiries related to the CIS, in consultation with CIS Clinical Analyst(s) and relevant PSSGs.
- Maintain and champion a standardized approach to the CIS and medication related technologies.
- Develop and review policies, procedures, and training materials related to the CIS and other medication related technologies.
- Provide subject matter expertise on the CIS and other medication related technologies.
- Test and validate relevant CIS functionality changes.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and CIS Clinical Analysts, to ensure the CIS (and other related pharmacy applications) meets clinical needs.
- Streamline and enhance pharmacy workflows involving clinical applications aiming to reduce inefficiencies and optimize medication safety.
- Maintain, update, and audit medication related technologies and CIS reports to ensure optimal use of these technologies in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Identify technology related medication management variations provincially, facilitate consensus for standardization improvements through working groups, and develop strategies to overcome barriers to adoption.
- Remain up to date on current medication administration practices and policies.
- Actively participate in the change management process.
- Collaborate with existing committees with respect to information system improvements, maintenance, and auditing.
- Assist with trouble-shooting and resolving medication management concerns associated with the CIS or other medication related technologies.
- Ensure issues are considered provincially for common themes and identify any issues that may require workflow, policy or other changes.
- Update and educate nursing, medical, and pharmacy teams, and other stakeholders as required.
- Lead multidisciplinary management and front line teams in work processes.
- Set and clarify objectives, encourage innovation and change, and resolve conflicts relative to the implementation and maintenance of CIS functionality changes and medication related technologies.
- Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have a Baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy or Entry-Level PharmD.
- Eligible for licensure as a Pharmacist with the Prince Edward Island College of Pharmacy.
- Must have considerable hospital pharmacy experience.
- Must have knowledge of CIS medication management and intravenous medication related work-flows.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and the ability to use, computer applications in the performance of duties.
- Proven ability to plan, estimate, schedule, and coordinate tasks.
- Must have effective organization and problem solving skills, superior attention to details and accuracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must have a good previous work and attendance record.
- Applicant must hold a valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, combined with the ability to think systemically and globally.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-orientated work setting.
Other Qualifications:
- An Accredited Canadian Pharmacy Residency in a hospital pharmacy will be considered an asset.
- Must be able to effectively provide leadership and direction to the organization and foster and promote co-operative teamwork with high levels of service-oriented performance.
- Additional relevant education and experience with medication safety and informatics will be considered an asset.
