Overview
R&D is where NovAtel's future revenue is built and represents one of the largest investment decisions the business makes each year. Hexagon's Autonomous Solutions division is looking for a Senior Financial Analyst to serve as the finance partner to our R&D organization.
You will own the R&D close, apply sound judgment to key accounting areas including development capitalization, non-recurring engineering (NRE) revenue recognition and provisions, and translate financial results into insights that leadership uses to make investment decisions. Reporting to the Director & Finance Partner, you will have direct visibility with senior leadership through reporting and business reviews.
The Location: This position is based in Calgary, Alberta.
The Company: Hexagon is a global leader in digital reality solutions, combining sensor, software and autonomous technologies. We are putting data to work to boost efficiency, productivity, quality and safety across industrial, manufacturing, infrastructure, public sector and mobility applications. You'll be joining over 17,000 people in 50 countries on the leading edge of your field.
Responsibilities
Close, controls and accounting judgment
- Manage monthly and quarterly entries, including NRE revenue recognition, deferred development, provisions, warranty and inventory analyses.
- Apply IFRS judgment to the capitalization and amortization of development projects, and participate in the semi-annual deferred development project review.
- Calculate the R&D split and review R&D rate calculations.
- Own project set-up in SyteLine and maintain the customer-funded equipment (CFE) register, including the annual on-hand audit, so costs and assets are tracked correctly from day one.
Performance insight
- Explain the drivers of R&D gross spend, cost recoveries, capitalization and amortization against prior year, prior quarter and forecast, separating timing impacts from structural change.
- Build the R&D content for quarterly business reviews, including net book value, capitalization and amortization trends, project roll-ups and reconciliation to the project system.
Forecasting and planning
- Lead the R&D forecast round and support users through each cycle.
- Consolidate the R&D forecast and build project-level amortization forecasts using the latest available data.
Audit, tax and government programs
- Act as the R&D point of contact for the year-end audit, including processes, major variances and provision analyses.
- Support Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) claim preparation with the tax team.
- Calculate, obtain approval for and remit government royalty payments, and provide unit data for group royalty invoicing.
Business partnering
- Advise project managers on expense coding, cost recoveries and accounting treatment so issues are resolved at the source rather than during close.
Qualifications
Must Have
- 5+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, cost accounting or project accounting, ideally within technology, engineering or advanced manufacturing.
- Working knowledge of IFRS, particularly development cost capitalization (IAS 38), revenue recognition (IFRS 15) and provisions (IAS 37).
- Experience running forecast cycles in an enterprise performance management (EPM) tool and working in an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
Key Success Factors
- You own the calendar, surface issues early and close the loop with stakeholders.
- You maintain a high standard of accuracy through month-end close and audit deadlines.
- You translate detailed financial results into clear, decision-useful insights for project managers and senior leaders.
- You bring practical accounting judgment and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to R&D business partnering.
Nice-to-Have
- SR&ED or other government funding program experience.
- Experience in a multinational group reporting environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Infor SyteLine, Power BI or similar tools.
