Original job description

Hive is a fast-growing SaaS company offering marketing solutions to live event promoters across North America. Our engineering team builds and maintains the systems that empower our customers to do powerful things simply and intuitively. We operate with agility - shipping minimum viable products, deploying multiple times daily, and rapidly iterating based on customer feedback.

At Hive, we handle impressive technical scale: ingesting high-volume data in real-time from 20+ integrations (including Ticketmaster and Eventbrite), storing and querying billions of customer data points, and delivering over 200 million emails and SMS messages monthly to our clients' customers. Our platform runs entirely on AWS, with a backend technology stack that includes Python, Django, MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Clickhouse, Redis, and a comprehensive suite of AWS services.

We're seeking a Senior Backend Software Development Engineer to solve hard problems, and to enable exceptional customer experiences at scale.

The Role

As a Senior Backend Software Development Engineer at Hive, you'll design, build, and maintain critical services and integrations that power our product ecosystem. This role focuses on developing scalable foundational services that enable our engineering teams to deliver value efficiently and predictably.

Tech Stack

AWS, Docker, Python, Django, MySQL, MongoDB, Clickhouse, Redis, Elasticsearch, DataDog, Sentry.

What You'll Do

Design and build robust backend services that enable Hive's marketing platform to scale
Own features end-to-end, from architecture and implementation through deployment and production support
Build and optimize high-throughput data pipelines processing billions of customer data points
Collaborate with product teams to design scalable APIs and integrate with external platforms like Ticketmaster and Shopify
Enhance application performance and reliability across the stack
Implement comprehensive monitoring and observability for the services you build

What We're Looking For

7+ years building backend services and APIs at scale
Strong experience with AWS (or similar cloud platforms)
Demonstrated expertise in Python/Django, database design, API design, distributed systems
Experience owning production services, including participating in on-call rotations and incident response
Experience with high-volume data processing and real-time systems
Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and explain complex technical concepts clearly

Bonus Qualifications

Proven experience scaling complex AWS environments and optimizing performance across the full technology stack during periods of significant growth
Track record of implementing and improving SLOs and observability solutions for backend services
Leadership experience in establishing and improving incident management processes

What We Offer

Opportunity to shape reliability practices: help define and scale how reliability is approached at a rapidly growing company
Meaningful salary and equity: you're rewarded based on impact
Work fully remotely in Canada: where you are most productive whether that be from your house, or elsewhere. We just ask that you are located in Canada and have the legal work authorization.
Flexible work hours: customize your schedule as long as it’s not disruptive to your role, team, and Hive.
Health + Insurance: Comprehensive health and dental coverage with a parental leave top-up program.
Live Experience stipend: a stipend to go out and experience live events - whether that’s a concert, festival, sporting event, or anything else that energizes and inspires you.
Open vacation/PTO policy: so you can be happy and healthy!
