Role Overview
HOCS Projects is seeking a Senior Civil Structural Engineer to provide technical leadership, engineering analysis and discipline oversight for the civil and structural components of industrial projects. The role is accountable for discipline scope, budget, schedule, technical quality and successful execution, while working closely with clients, Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams and mentoring junior engineers and designers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead civil and structural engineering activities through concept development, feasibility studies, FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, construction and project close-out.
- Perform and oversee analysis and design for structural steel, reinforced concrete, shallow and deep foundations, piling, pipe racks, equipment supports, modular structures, buildings and industrial facility infrastructure.
- Oversee civil design for grading, earthworks, drainage, roads, underground services and related site-development requirements.
- Prepare and review calculations, drawings, specifications, studies, material take-offs, cost estimates, Design Basis Memorandums, FEED reports, CWPs and scopes of work.
- Lead design, model and constructability reviews, risk assessments and interdisciplinary checks to address safety, quality, operability and construction risks.
- Assess existing structures and site conditions and develop practical brownfield modification, reinforcement, repair and integration solutions.
- Maintain accountability for discipline scope, resources, budgets, schedules, forecasts, deliverables, changes, risks and technical quality.
- Review and authenticate applicable civil and structural engineering deliverables and accept Engineer of Record responsibilities when formally assigned.
- Coordinate with clients, Project Managers, vendors, fabricators, contractors and other disciplines to resolve technical issues and support integrated project delivery.
- Support proposals, estimates, procurement, vendor and shop drawing reviews, construction RFIs, field changes, site assessments and project close-out.
- Mentor intermediate and junior engineers, EITs, designers and technicians and support effective engineering practices and standards.
Education, Professional Registration & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university.
- Current Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA and ability to review and authenticate work within the individual’s area of competence.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive civil and structural engineering experience, preferably with an engineering consultancy or EPC organization supporting industrial and oil and gas projects.
- Demonstrated experience leading civil and structural scopes through concept or feasibility, FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction and close-out.
- Industrial design experience involving structural steel, reinforced concrete, equipment and building foundations, piling, pipe racks or equipment supports and associated civil site development.
- Strong brownfield oil and gas facility modification and integration experience is preferred.
- Proficiency with recognized analysis and design software such as STAAD.Pro, S-FRAME, RISA, SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, Civil 3D or comparable applications.
- Working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD, model-review and document-mark-up tools, along with applicable Canadian codes and standards, including the National Building Code of Canada, CSA standards and CISC guidance.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication, analytical judgement, organization, leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada and able to travel to remote project sites and meet client safety and site-access requirements.
