About HOCS Projects

HOCS Projects is a Calgary-based engineering, procurement and project management firm supporting the energy industry. We deliver dependable, innovative and responsible design solutions, with constructability and operability considered from project start through fabrication, construction and operations.

Role Overview

HOCS Projects is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership and discipline oversight for electrical engineering and design across projects of varying size and complexity. The role is accountable for technical quality, scope, resources, budget, schedule and the successful delivery of electrical deliverables while working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical discipline from concept development through detailed engineering, construction and commissioning support.
  • Direct the design and specifications of low- and medium-voltage power systems, including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motors, variable frequency drives, emergency power, grounding, protection and control.
  • Lead or review load-flow, short-circuit, protection-coordination, arc-flash, motor-starting, voltage-drop, cable-sizing and harmonic studies.
  • Prepare and review design criteria, specifications, data sheets, calculations, studies, single-line diagrams, schedules, material take-offs, heat-tracing drawings, CWP documentation and IFC deliverables.
  • Ensure designs comply with the Canadian Electrical Code, applicable CSA and IEEE standards, Alberta requirements, client standards and project-specific requirements.
  • Provide Engineer of Record review and authentication for applicable electrical deliverables, where required.
  • Manage electrical scope, staffing, man-hour estimates, budgets, schedules, forecasts, progress, changes, interfaces and technical risks.
  • Coordinate with clients, vendors, contractors and other engineering disciplines; resolve technical issues and review vendor data and submissions.
  • Support procurement, field reviews, RFIs, construction verification, testing, energization, commissioning, start-up, turnover and close-out.
  • Provide day-to-day technical direction and mentor engineers, designers and draftspersons.

Education, Professional Registration & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Current Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA and ability to authenticate applicable electrical engineering documents.
  • Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience in an industrial consulting environment; oil and gas experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership of electrical engineering and design on industrial EPC or EPCM projects through multiple execution phases.
  • Strong experience with industrial low- and medium-voltage power distribution, MCC systems, power-system studies, electrical protection and coordination, grounding, hazardous-location design, heat tracing and construction documentation.
  • Experience supporting equipment specification, procurement, vendor coordination, field installation, commissioning and start-up.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and working experience with ETAP, SKM PowerTools or equivalent power-system analysis software.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, technical judgement and ability to collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada and able to travel to client, vendor and project sites as required.

Application Information

We kindly ask candidates not to submit multiple applications for the same position. Only candidates selected for pre-screening or an interview will be contacted.
