Original job description
What if your next story could help someone see their community in a whole new way?
At Hopewell, storytelling starts with people. We’re looking for someone who enjoys getting out into the community, building genuine connections and capturing the moments that deserve to be shared. If you can turn conversations, photos and everyday experiences into thoughtful, engaging content, this could be your opportunity to make an impact through creativity.
About HopewellHopewell’s story began in 1983, when John and Joanne Oosterhuis opened their farmhouse in Ariss, Ontario to children with disabilities. Today, Hopewell supports children, youth and adults with developmental and physical disabilities across Guelph-Wellington through supported living, respite and community programs. Choice, belonging, dignity and a fulfilling life remain central to our work.
How You’ll Make an Impact- Discover stories and build relationships: Become a familiar presence across Hopewell’s homes, programs and community activities. Connect with those supported, families, employees, volunteers, partners and leaders; interview people thoughtfully and help them share experiences in their own voices.
- Create compelling, respectful content: Capture and edit photography, short-form video, interviews and stories for social media, the website, newsletters and other channels. Apply inclusive, person-centred practices and informed consent to ensure people are represented with dignity, respect and authenticity.
- Keep digital communications moving: Coordinate content calendars, story leads, approvals and approved assets; adapt content across channels, use foundational SEO and social media best practices, monitor engagement and responsibly review and refine technology-assisted drafts.
- Support community visibility: Create stories and promotional materials for fundraising, donor stewardship, recruitment, campaigns and events; identify potential media, speaking, award and partnership opportunities for leadership consideration.
- Connect our employees: Develop staff stories, recognition pieces, newsletters and accessible updates alongside Human Resources, leadership and operational teams, including content for employees who do not regularly use email.
- Protect and strengthen Hopewell’s voice: Follow brand, accessibility, privacy and visual standards; create practical graphics and materials; and review results with leadership and our external communications partner to continuously improve.
- Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, digital media or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- 2+ years of relevant work experience.
- Strong writing, editing and interviewing skills, with the ability to adapt stories for different audiences and channels while building trust and asking thoughtful, sensitive questions.
- Confidence creating and editing photography and short-form video using smartphones, cameras and common editing tools.
- Practical experience using social media for organizational communications, understanding audiences and keeping pace with evolving platforms, tools and approaches.
- Working knowledge of foundational SEO and accessible, audience-focused website writing; advanced or technical SEO is an asset.
- Initiative, curiosity, strong organization and follow-through, and comfort identifying opportunities and managing multiple stories, approvals and deadlines.
- Sound judgment about privacy, informed consent, accuracy and respectful representation, plus comfort learning and responsibly using AI, automation and digital communications tools with human review.
- Knowledge of inclusive communications, person-centred practices, accessibility and respectful representation is an asset; willingness to learn and apply these principles is essential.
- $35.08 per hour (approximately $72,965.98 annually), in a full-time, permanent position with regular daytime hours and occasional evening or weekend work.
- Group benefits including life, AD&D, health, medical and dental coverage; a contributory RRSP with Hopewell contributions up to 3%.
- Paid time off, including up to 25 days of combined vacation and holiday pay annually, depending on length of service; a collaborative team and opportunities for professional growth.
This is a hands-on role requiring regular visits to Hopewell locations and community activities. A valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation are required. Some evening and weekend work is needed for events and time-sensitive communications. You’ll work with leadership, operational teams and an external communications partner who provides guidance and mentorship.
