Horizon Recruitment is recruiting for a Assistant Controller to join an established organization that is looking to strengthen its accounting operations, improve internal processes, and bring greater structure and accountability to its finance team.
This is an immediate, three-month contract opportunity with a high likelihood of becoming permanent for the right person. Reporting to the Controller, you will take an active role in improving day-to-day accounting processes, strengthening financial controls, and ensuring the team delivers accurate and timely financial reporting.
This role is ideal for an experienced Senior Accountant or an emerging accounting leader who enjoys solving problems, improving processes, and helping a team perform at its best. Candidates from industry or public practice are welcome, provided they bring strong technical accounting skills and the ability to take ownership of existing processes.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations across multiple companies and legal entities.
- Provide hands-on leadership and supervision to a team of approximately four accounting professionals.
- Review existing accounting processes, identify gaps, and implement practical improvements.
- Bring structure, consistency, and accountability to the accounting team.
- Ensure bank reconciliations are completed accurately and on time.
- Strengthen financial controls and ensure accounting procedures are followed.
- Improve the accuracy and timeliness of monthly financial reporting.
- Oversee general accounting activities, including accounts payable, cost control, and treasury accounting.
- Manage high volumes of internal and external transactions while maintaining accurate financial records.
- Work closely with the Controller to resolve accounting issues and improve overall team performance.
- Identify process bottlenecks and introduce more efficient ways of working.
- Provide clear direction, follow up on outstanding items, and ensure deadlines are met.
Requirements:
- Accounting designation or progress toward a professional accounting designation (CPA preferred).
- Strong hands-on accounting experience, ideally at the Senior Accountant level or above.
- Previous experience supervising, mentoring, or coordinating the work of other accounting professionals.
- Solid knowledge of financial controls, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Experience managing multiple entities and high transaction volumes.
- Demonstrated ability to assess existing processes, identify weaknesses, and implement improvements.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize competing deadlines.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach with the confidence to address issues and hold team members accountable.
- Experience in either public practice or industry will be considered.
- Availability to work fully in-office in downtown Vancouver for the duration of the contract.
Remuneration:
- Contract duration: Initial three-month contract with a high likelihood of becoming permanent.
- Maximum hourly pay rate: $70 per hour.
- Work arrangement: Fully in-office in downtown Vancouver, BC.
- Permanent employment opportunity may be available following the initial contract.
Only candidates eligible to work in Canada will be considered
