Original job description

Company information

Hushmail is a well-established company with customers primarily in healthcare. We have been providing high-security email services since 1998 and offering online forms and electronic signatures since 2019. We serve thousands of customers in healthcare and we see massive opportunity in that market.

Hushmail has a highly capable team and a supportive environment. The company is small, so everyone has the opportunity to make a significant impact. We notice and reward high performance. Hushmail is headquartered in beautiful downtown Vancouver, B.C, Canada. We actively seek a diverse pool of candidates for all job roles.

Who is suited for this position?

You are an experienced engineer who is comfortable working across software development, infrastructure, and production operations.

You have strong Linux knowledge and meaningful software development experience, ideally with Java and PHP. You can read and modify application code, troubleshoot production issues, and take technically complex changes from development through testing, deployment, migration, and stable production operation.

You prefer automation over repetitive manual work and are comfortable owning complex technical projects independently.

Salary

The expected salary for this position is CAD150,000-CAD200,000, depending on experience.

Hours

40 hours per week. Working hours are flexible but need to roughly align with business hours in Pacific Time.

Responsibilities

Own the production readiness of major application changes.
Design and improve CI/CD, packaging, and deployment systems.
Plan and execute complex deployments and migrations.
Modernize and containerize existing applications.
Perform load, stress, and performance testing.
Make Java and PHP changes required for scalability, reliability, or deployment.
Improve rollback, recovery, configuration, and environment consistency.
Maintain and modernize application runtimes, libraries, and dependencies.
Improve observability and production troubleshooting.
Contribute to cloud system design and disaster-recovery work.
Help applications deploy and recover consistently across datacenter and AWS environments.
Document systems, procedures, and technical decisions.
Provide technical guidance to other engineers.

What we're looking for

Strong Linux and troubleshooting skills.
Professional Java experience.
Working knowledge of PHP or ability to work effectively in unfamiliar code.
Experience with CI/CD and containers.
Experience operating production systems.
Understanding of networking, databases, and distributed systems.
Strong scripting and automation ability.
Good judgment when making production changes.
Ability to independently own complex projects.

Useful experience

AWS.
Disaster recovery.
MySQL.
Container orchestration.
Application profiling and load testing.
Legacy application modernization.

What success looks like

Success in this role means complex application changes move into production safely, predictably, and with progressively less manual effort.

We expect this role to contribute to:

reliable and repeatable deployment processes;
fewer manual deployment and migration steps;
effective load and production-readiness testing;
clear validation, rollback, and recovery procedures;
minimal deployment-related production issues;
increasing standardization of application packaging and deployment;
improved application and infrastructure observability;
reduced dependency on individual operational knowledge;
reliable application deployment into Cloud environments;
tested, repeatable disaster-recovery processes.
