Job Description – Business System Analyst

Location: Toronto, ON

Work Model: Hybrid – 2 days per week in person at the Toronto office preferred

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced BSA TSBI professional with strong expertise in business analysis, SQL development, data modelling, data analysis, and source-to-target data mapping. The role involves analyzing legacy systems, documenting business transformation rules, preparing technical designs, and supporting L2/L3 data models within large-scale data initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Legacy System Analysis and Data Mapping

• Analyze legacy systems and review target table mapping documents to determine operational objectives, business functions, and output requirements.
• Trace target field mappings back to the original data elements in source systems.
• Perform data analysis and data profiling across different legacy systems using SQL.
• Document source-to-target data flows for each table, including business transformation rules, key-cutting processes for surrogate keys, and reference data used to enhance target data.
• Collaborate with TSBI and ETL leads to review code and document business rules when mapping documentation is unavailable.
• Maintain mapping documentation and technical requirements.

L2/L3 Data Models and Mapping Design

• Support the business team in creating the L2 Model in collaboration with Project Business Analysts, Solution Architects, and TSBI.
• Collaborate with data scientists, business analysts, and IT teams to integrate L2/L3 models into data pipelines.
• Prepare technical designs and data movement mappings for new L2 Models.
• Review key-cutting processes for the L2 Model and obtain approval from L2 Schema Owners.
• Ensure only BORT system data is populated into the L2 schema, while other reference and tactical data is consumed directly by L3 processes.
• Document business transformation rules for each target table in L2-to-L3 mapping.
• Support the implementation of custom surrogate key processes for L3 tables, with keys different from those used in L2 tables.
• Ensure systems with one-off tables containing business data are loaded into the L3 schema for target table processing.

Business Analysis and Technical Documentation

• Determine operational objectives by analyzing business functions, gathering information, and evaluating output requirements and formats.
• Analyze requirements, design solutions, and identify required modifications.
• Define project requirements, milestones, phases, and deliverables, and support project team formation.
• Monitor project progress, resolve issues, prepare progress reports, and recommend actions.
• Conduct requirement-gathering sessions and stakeholder workshops across business and technology teams.
• Prepare data models and technical design documentation according to established standards.
• Assess intake requests for new projects and change requests.
• Work with business and technology teams to fulfill data requirements.
• Maintain confidentiality and protect operational information.
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge through workshops and continuous learning.

Data Governance and Quality

• Support the implementation of data governance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement data quality frameworks.
• Improve data accuracy and integrity while reducing errors.

Mandatory Must-Have Skills and Experience

• Strong PL/SQL and T-SQL development skills, including query optimization.
• Experience in data modelling using industry-standard modelling tools, gap analysis, and MS Visio.
• Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, ETL processes, and source-to-target data mapping.
• Proven experience conducting requirements-gathering sessions and stakeholder workshops across business and technology teams.
• Experience in data analysis, data profiling, legacy system analysis, and technical documentation within large-scale data initiatives.

Nice-to-Have Skills and Experience

• Knowledge of banking domain data, including customer, account, and transaction data.
• Experience with Sybase PowerDesigner for data modelling.
• Knowledge of cloud technologies such as Amazon AWS.
• Familiarity with data governance and data quality frameworks.
• Experience supporting L2/L3 data models and enterprise data warehouse environments.
